This is an interesting discussion, and I find myself siding with those that say overlanding can be a broader term used to describe a variety of levels of the same activities. I think the example of Skiing mentioned earlier is a great analogy. Add to it the following:
Surfing - surfing can be on 40-50 foot waves that require a wave runner tow to rider in, and require a 12-15 foot Gun. It can also mean somebody on a 5'6" board riding 1'-2'shore break, or a 10 foot longboard surfing wind waves in the great lakes.
Gaming - do i need a state of the art cutting edge graphics card and processor? or does playing solitaire on my economy laptop count?
To 1engineer 's point, if someone asks what the best gaming laptop is, the answer is probably the cutting edge top of the line graphics card and processor option. But just because its the best, does not mean its the best for that particular person's usage. more info is needed to determine what the best for a particular person's usage.
Personally i just call it an adventure, because for me and my kids, it always is!
