Yeah he gets it. Pretty much why I wrote the cheque on mine last year, even if it is just a daily driver 90% of the time :thumb3:

Well written, hits all the correct points for sure.
 
Honestly, the Motor Trend and Car&Driver reviews were fair enough. I didn't take them as haters -- They just came from a more "everyday person" point of view. The 4Runner is a slightly divisive vehicle, even amongst the crowd of owners. Toyota doesn't sell them thinking they will appeal to a large portion of their customer base. People that like them really like them and others either don't care or don't like em. So what.

That was a well done and written review -- but you could tell the writer is a fan boy.

Yeah, you're right about that - but I've never understood their reviews very well because I've never understood why the general public is so hot and heavy for SUVs. I've had 4 4Runners, a Tacoma and an Isuzu Amigo but I just don't get why most people want SUVs. If you don't take them up to the mountains and beat on them what's the point? The flip side is the unpopularity of wagons. It makes no sense - for 99.99% of drivers a wagon is demonstratively superior to an SUV. Holds just as much stuff, available with AWD for the snow but handles and rides much better due to the lower center of gravity. I've had several wagons and several off-road trucks and I can't for the life of me see why I'd want something in between.

I am just happy for the good, honest review. He is spot on IMO. It does many things well, and nothing perfect except for the amazing adaptability from on road to off road.

I hope this and other reviews like it will ensure toyota realizes they should keep this baby going for decades to come. :hippie:
 
this review hit all the major points for me as well. Though 90 percent of my drivig involves just going to the store or work in back, I just this vehicle in particular to aid in my mountain biking/hunting/landscape and wildflife photography. i sometimes find myself in situations that a normal vehicle would just not cut the mustard. Even traded my 3rd gen Taco in for my 18 4runer just so I have the ability to sleep in my vehicle comfortably. Well done, Jalopnick!
 
I completely agree about the 4Runner being able to make more than a few sales with a manual transmission. Good review, too. There is just something charming about a 4Runner.

I haven’t had one in 16 years and never on a truck so maybe I’m missing out.

If you don't know you wouldn't understand any sort of explanation we might give you.

My 5th gen is the first auto transmission vehicle I've ever owned and the tranny is easily my least favorite part of the vehicle.

No one argues that this particular transmission is greatly lacking.

I’m asking what the advantages are of a manual when off road.

Does crawl control and atrac work with a manual?

As to why people get SUV's, it's the perfect compromise. Stock they do everything, but nothing well (in general). This means it's a minivan or Suv for a family of four with two kids in all day soccer events. etc.
 
Thanks for reconnecting me with Jalopnik! Sums up why I brought a 2018 4Runner. Similar to my 2003 it has some compromises - what vehicle doesn't? On-road only I might have done something different but when I go off-road I forget all the on-road compromises.
 
More tards who think that MT has any place in a modern 4x4.

These are the same idiots who burn out a clutch trying to get over a boulder on the trail.

Dunno about crawl control but ATRAC works just fine (why wouldn't it?). In some situations an auto might be slightly advantageous off-road. It's just not as satisfying to drive is the issue. Again, no way to explain that if you don't know.

I've been wheeling manual transmissions for 30 years without ever burning out a clutch. Don't lash out at me because you don't know how to drive one.

It's literally a waste of time and effort to drive one on and off road.

Good riddance.

That and Toyota screwed over lots of FJC and Taco drivers with its shitty T/O bearing issues.
