Firstly…
My 4Runner seems to consume about half a gallon of coolant every 6 months. Where this coolant is going, I have no idea. The motor oil usually looks pretty great when I drain it every 3,000-5,000 miles. No sign of coolant. The coolant also doesn't seem to ever be contaminated with oil either. No obvious leaks.
Every once in a blue moon when driving with the windows down I'll get that sweet smell that tickles the inside of my noise due to it's strength, and I suspect I'm smelling coolant haha. I could be wrong though. And it is so rare that I get a whiff. Again it's just half a gallon every 6 months or so.
I have called it "normal" for the entire time I've had the 4runner.
When I bought the truck from the original owner, it was running regular old ethyl-gly green coolant. Then when I had the timing belt, water pump, tensioners and thermostat done, (the only thing I didn't do myself - I had toyota do it when I first purchased the truck because they still had all oem stock parts available) TOYOTA switched me over to TOYOTA RED, Long Life coolant. A few of the older mechanics there said it would make my water pump happy and they had to flush out the entire system anyway.
The stuff is nearly $30 for a concentrated gallon though. Is there an aftermarket equivalent? Just curious.
Are many of you guys running TOYOTA RED in your 22re/3VZE engines or have you been staying true to the old green formula for $8 a concentrated gallon?
