A little diff...

Hi people,

I am sure I can get some help from some of the old timers...

As mentioned in my intro, I am suspecting my LSD (the diff, not the acid...) is jammed.:bluejump:

I have noticed some excessive tire wear on the rear wheels over the last month, and there is a "grinding" noise from the wheels on corners (as if someone would use the 4x4 on dry tarmac) :confused:

Anyone know what it could be? Or is it acceptable for cars with the original LSD?

Umm, what are you driving?
An LSD shouldn't cause any tire rear problems.
Drain a little gear oil from the diff and see if there's any metal shavings in the oil or on the magnetic plug.
 
A none stock, clutch type LSD could cause some drag on the inside tire on a tight turn. A gear driven stock type LSD will not cause any drag on a turn.

Its a 1995 3.0TD 4Runner with the stock LSD.
I lifted up the end this weekend and the wheels rotata the same direction when turned. :thumb3:

I have now ordered some Limited Slip oil (not as easy to source as I would have thought!!!!) and I guess I will be changing the oil the upcoming weekend.

Hmm, I will keep an eye out for metal shavings...

Most all gear oils have an LS additive in them already. You can buy a product called Trans X made by the CRC company.
Trans X comes in a blue 7oz tube and is readily available in most auto parts stores. you will only need a few ounces.
If both wheels turned in the same direction the LSD is locked.
A gear driven torque biasing helical LSD will not lock unless both wheels have resistance such as being in contact with the ground. If you had the truck in the air and both wheels tune the same way this could mean the LSD is in a locked setting such as a clutch type LSD will be. A gear driven torque biasing helical LSD will allow the wheels to turn in opposite direction when both wheels are not in contact with the ground.

Gear driven LSDs do not require an LSD additive because, they do not need a friction type chemical to work.
 
Hmm, I wasnt sure with the oil, as most of the oils I get here (Luxembourg, in the heartland of Europe), are GL-4 or GL-5 standard... not the recommended GL-5 LS.

Anyhoo, I got hold of a great shop who can provide me some Castrol Hypoy LS oil for the LSD, along with some other nice parts. :D

Yep, both wheels were in the air and the diff was locking... Now, my worries are if the "unlock" at a certain torque, like it should, or if it stays locked (hence the grinding noise and tire wear!). :nono:

Put the truck back up in the air and be sure the truck is SAFE!!! Leave the truck in Neutral so that the wheels can be turned easy. Have a friend hold one wheel by hand why you try to turn the other. The wheel you are trying to turn should break free and turn smooth but, with some resistance.

If the wheel will not break free hold the wheel firm and have your friend try to turn the other wheel. If they can't turn their wheel without yours turning too then, the LSD is a spool type or damaged.

The wheels should break free and turn smooth with some resistance.
