Having used both, the cheaper ones will work just fine for occasional use or a few times. However if you are going to use them hard and multiple times, buy once cry once. (With most things in life). I'm not saying that the most expensive item is always the best but I have rarely regretted spending the money to get the best I could buy but I have often bought something at a lower price point only to wish later on that I had spent the extra up front.
FWIW I just told my best friend, who just bought a new Bronco Sport for beach camping to buy a shovel, CHEAP traction boards, and a 12v compressor as all he needs. I only recommend Maxtracks if the price doesn't hurt you, or if you are going to be using them a lot.
Recoveries with my Maxtrax in the last 3 years...

After all these uses I only have a few teeth, (less than 10 across all 4 boards), that are damaged. I have been around cheaper boards during recoveries and while they work just as good as far as the extraction I am not sure they would hold up to that kind of use. If you are just fire road/beach camping/light offroad, get a $100.00 pair, throw them in the back for insurance, and don't worry about it.

X-bull works fine however they don't stack as well as maxtrax and take up more vertical space

When it comes to overall cost, to me the extra money for Maxtrax is a drop in the overall bucket. Folks spend anywhere from $1k to +$10k on suspension, $1k on a roof rack, $1k on wheels/tires, +$1k on armor, etc so the extra ~$200 for a name brand recovery board is pretty minuscule compared to how much money folks dump into their rig.
But I get it... money is money. But there's a reason we all get name brand suspension and racks and sliders and armor... because we want it to work when the time comes, and that name brand inspires confidence in the product.

Also, others here have already vouched for competitors like XBULL.
There's nothing wrong in wanting the more expensive option, so long as you know why you're doing it. Plenty of us like the way things look, and yes the thinner more expensive option does look better.
3-4 times better? Not to me.
I picked up a pair of black XBULLs and haven't looked back.salsanacho

I'm not saying xbull is bad, but even watching the video you can't say that it's better than Maxtrax, it isn't... even that vid says that. Like I said, it's your money, but when you spend 10's of thousands of dollars to upgrade a rig, a couple hundred extra for better recovery equipment is a drop in the bucket.
Hmm.. I don't remember stating XBULL was better. Cheers.

It seems they rarely go on sale and I was very fortunate to be able to get in on one for a considerable discount in the TacomaWorld forum.
I've used them a bunch and even more on other folks. I can't say anything about the other brands but these have been fantastic.

Mount them on your roof rack. Dozen's of ways to do that. I got a set of Victory 4x4 rails and will be using carriage bolts with plastic knobs and washer spacers to hold down mine.
Totally agree, but what about the guy who didn't drop one extra cent into his 4R. $300 would be insane compared to his 10k Synthetic oil change splurge and his once a year off road trip to a Natl park. lol
I see no issue buying a set of cheaper ones if your off roading is mild and your expectations are realistic (may need to replace after first few uses).
I will have to say this. After all the videos i have seen and what some have said. Having a set of "Maxtrax" is probably the best investment in recovery one can do, and maybe only second to a winch.
As a side note it appears the entire US is out of MAXTRAX... Well except for maybe pink. lol
