A quick Hella 550 wiring question

Hi all,
I know there are many posts and write-ups on wiring the Hella lamps ...I've read many, but i still have a question about the wiring before I go ahead and do it. I'm a bit confused because some diagrams online have 3 leads going to the switch and some have 2. My switch just has two.

So I want them to come on whenever the parking lights are on, and therefore when either low or high beam are on. From other posts I've read, I'm thinking I'll attach one side of the switch to the live dimmer switch wire in the dash.

For the relay, I'm doing:
30 -> battery +
87 -> lights
86 -> switch
85 -> ?????
I'm not sure what Relay jack 85 should be connected to. On the diagram it goes to something labeled as 31. What is 31?!?

your help is much appreciated!

like this.

85 comes from the switch. 86 goes to ground.

ok, thanks so much for the reply and the diagram!

So if I only want them to come on when the parking lights are on, I would wire what you have as green, into my dash dimmer switch, right?

Also, I've attached the Hella diagram which shows a different setup with 85 & 85 to your diagram. But your way will work with my lights??

Thanks!

You really need to ignore the diagrams and think about what you are doing. 85 & 86 are the coil terminals. If one end has 12V+ and the other has ground, the coil will energize and allow the lights to come on. It doesn't matter whether 85 or 86 is connected to one or the other, as long as they are both there. It also doesn't matter whether the switch is on the 85 side or the 86 side; it works either way.

Now, the next question is whether your dash switch is providing 12V+ or ground. The 4Runners without DRL run 12V+ directly to the headlamps and all switching is on the ground side. The stalk also controls the ground side of the coil of the TAIL relay which sends power to the parking lamps. So I assume that the wire you get from the dash switch will give you ground when the parking lights are on. Use a test light to confirm that is the case. If that is indeed the case, the other side of the coil needs to be connected to a 12V+. I would use the same fused source you are using for the lights.

If you tap from the other side of the TAIL relay in the engine bay, that is a 12V+ source and thus the other side of your Hella coil needs to be a ground. The diagrams are no substitute for understanding what you are doing.

If, for some silly reason like being Canadian, you have DRL's on a '98, then the side of the coil opposite the switch probably needs to go to ground. Report back, and I'll look at it. Extra charge for Canadian wiring advice.

I'm basing all this on this layout:
