A Rant....

Hey guys, just needin' to vent a little...

I'm 19 and I totally understand that I'm young an inexperinced in life... But I work really hard at my job and seem to be getting nowhere... I am an "office assistant" and basically what that means is anything that the higher ups don't wanna handle, I get to do... I have to do a crap load of paperwork, puch numbers on a computer, and answer the phone all day... The only reasons i'm still here are (1) my mother is my direct boss, and she really likes the way I do my job, it makes hers easier and it's easier for her to tell me what she needs... (2) When she or any of the other guys are out of the office, I sorta get to fill in for them, and I love doing that job... (3) I've been told by the owner of the company that there is a future here for me...

My gripes-- people that do 1/2 of the work I do, have zero responsibilities and complain when I do things that aren't exactly the way they want, also get paid 4 times the amount that I do...

I just can't see why... I guess it's seniority (sp?) but it sucks!!

I worked at the same company last year in the Maint. dept. out in the warehouse and this year after I had a few college courses they moved me into the office... I consider myself a very responsible person, and I think I have a very business-oriented mind... Especially for my age...

So stick it out and keep Mamma happy, or look for a new job?

Stay in college and get your degree...PRIMARY FOCUS FOR YOU.

Once you have a college (or postgraduate) degree, then either ask for a better job at the same company or move on.

I would stick to the current job...as long as it does not interfere with your college studies. I am sure that there are people behind you waiting for your position to open up...so, be glad that you have a job at your age. (If there is no one who wants your job, then you are screwed!)

Okay, young grasshopper; I am probably older than your dad & am going to give you some advice.

Stay where you are, take some college courses - even if it is just night classes at the local community college. You'll be setting yourself up for a great future and will show the "boss" that have higher aspirations.

You have your whole life in front of you, so don't sweat it if you think you are not being treated quite right. Heck, I have been working since I was 16 and still often believe that I am not compensated properly. You should get used to feeling that way unless you get a cushy government job. LOL!

The kicker is having to fix these guys screw ups all day... And it's difficult to ask for a raise because my mom is my boss (and suprovisors head up all payroll in their depts) and she feels that she can't just ask to give me a raise... Difficult because we work at a small-ish business, and everyone knows everything...

Oh and I guess it'd be cool if you guys knew what I did, I think it's cool to tell people how I pay for the Runner...

I work a produce distribution center in B'Ham, Ala. We are actually one of the largest potato/onion/tomato repackers in the Southeast... We handle re-packing orders for many supermarket chains, schools, and food service industries... Pretty much if you live in La, Ms, Al, Fl, or Tn, and buy 5#, 10# or tray packed potaoes or onions, I may have been involved in that product getting to your store!!!! It's realy cool to get out to the stores and see our products finally on a shelf...

It sounds pretty lame but I enjoy the getting out and managing portion when I get to do it... The office/grunt work- not so much...

Thoughts in random order:

1. Unless you can find another job that you would be happier with, keep what you have. First, the job market isn't the best right now; second, the experience your gaining will be fantastic for you later; and third, you're lucky to have that kind of job at your age.

2. Even though you may get frustrated at "people that do 1/2 of the work I do, have zero responsibilities and complain when I do things that aren't exactly the way they want, also get paid 4 times the amount that I do," just get used to it. That happens all the time.

3. For the ones that complain when things aren't done exactly the way they want, sit down with them and ask how you can do better next time. Everyone likes to be a teacher, so you're telling them that you value them taking the time to teach you. Plus, it's a great learning experience, and when you show them the next time you listened and made the changes, over time you will turn them into a fan.

4. Spend time with your Mom's boss, too. That's the best way to help find other positions in the company so you widen your experience. And that will let you see what kind of future you might have at the company.

Definately get your college degree. Don't worry too much about the job going no where, it's the work experience that counts. You're young and that experience demonstrates you're mature and responsible. As you get closer to graduation and earning your degree, look for internships and jobs that relate to your degree and field. Breaking into the industry early will give you a good kick start for your career.

The lifetime earning potential increases a good amount as you go higher in education level. It's best to go as far as you can in terms of education level when you're young. It gets harder and harder to go back to school after you leave. I've been working for a good number of years now and it gets tougher and tougher for me to go back for my Masters. If I don't do it now, it'll be impossible when I become a parent.

I suggest you look for a new job. Find one where you can do the same (college and work). But don't quit this one until you're hired on the other one.

Maybe you need to develop particular skills or maybe becoming certified in an area that no one else has. Just have some idea of where you want to be in 5 years

When you get stressed out, remember to take your 4runner out.

I am one of the only 2 guys that work here that speak Spainish And that gets me a lot calls to the warehouse......(we all know how prevelant Spainish speaking people are in the produce business:biggrin2: ) So I guess 1pt. for me! I do like my work but co-workers frustrate me like crazy, but I guess ya'll are right, it has to happen everywhere... A few that work in the engine room, slaving away while the others enjoy their "free ride"...

I knew the smartest guys out there drove 4Runners so I figured who better to ask???

And the Runner gets a lot of "stress relief" miles on the weekends... Thanks for the words guys

You will have your time in the future... Its not just the type of job and positon you are into..Its how you adjust to those lazy co-workers and absorb pressures..At 19 yrs old you've already started to feel and face real world challenges that's the big..big advantage you have over those youths, where their only goal is to earn money to buy an I-pod.. Feeling that way is normal for a person that has standards for himself..Its just how you manage your emotions and reactions..
Stay in that job..reverse those emotions and turn those hard feelings into hi-octane fuel and drive towards success!!

If you're wondering how some people get to the positions that they do after observing their obviously poor work ethic, then all you have to do is look up "The Peter Principle". If you enjoy the work you do and get paid a decent wage then I think you should stay put. Note that I said decent and not "good". Unfortunately you will be hard pressed to find a good wage due to your education level and age. Also an employer is less likely to view a college student as a serious employee/promotion prospect unless the field the student is studying is directly related to the field the student works in.

Get an on campus job, they are way over paid and you can usually do your HW...

yea i know you feel. I'm an apprentice carpenter and i think i'm pretty skillful. but in annoys me to see people do half the work i do and get paid lot more. some guys just don't do anything at all. Like my foreman for example, literally does nothing all do and i'm not the only one to say it. unfortunately i don't have the luxury to got to college due to life situations. But basically thats just life. you gotta start at the bottom and work your way to the top. next thing thing you know, someone just starting out is gonna start complaining about you :biggrin2:
