A rattle when I close my doors

I just got a 2018 T4R.

One thing that is a mystery to me. When I'm outside and I shut any of the 4 doors, I hear a rattle from some where in the back. When one of the windows are cracked open a little I don't hear a rattle when the doors shut. It's almost like the air pressure when everything is closed up causes the rattle when the door shuts. I tried checking for anything loose in the lift gate area and couldn't fine any.

there is something that clicks inside the body, behind the rear passenger door..... Like a relay. Whenever you close a door.

It's easiest to hear it if you gently close the rear passenger door. and listen carefully. It's located about symmetrical to where the gas door is on the driver side.

It's not a cause for concern. Or at least it hasn't caused me any issues since I noticed it 3 years ago.

Recently “diagnosed” this on the GX.. it was passenger sun visor not fully clipped up.

I hear the same rattling on my 2014. It seems to be coming from under the rig. I need to get underneath and check it out.

My vote is spare tire chain rattling around. Shortly after buying the 4runner, I found that the spare tire winch had about 1/2 turn to make it tight. Got rid of the clunk I had over speed bumps, but I still get what I assume is the loose chain clanking around back there.

Another thing to check is roof rack cross bars. One of mine had a rattle that took a while to track down. Every screw was a little loose.

My usual culprit is one of the seat belts not retracted correctly and rattling against the plastic pillar trim, just a thought

Yes I would say the rattle is more like a single click.


But I don't think it's a relay, seat belt, loose spare tire chain, jack etc like other people have mention... because it doesn't do it when the windows are open which seems like it has something to do with the air pressure. It seems like there is a loose part somewhere that acts as some kind of trap door where so when the one of the passenger doors shut with the windows closed, the air pressure inside the cabin when the passenger doors closing makes some part open and close causing the noise. I'm not sure if I'm making sense to people when I describe this.

Whenever I shut the doors my back license plate/holder makes a click/rattle noise.

I think I figured out where the rattle is coming from.

There is a trap door behind the bumper to relieve interior air pressure.

I had someone shut the door while I was behind and can hear a click noise behind the bumper.

I think you're spot on with that. I just opened a window and closed the rear passenger door and it did not make the sound in the back. I closed the window and it makes the usual soft "click" sound after closing the door.

Glad you sorted it out.

I know someone who's been playing a joke on another co-worker by putting quarters in his door beside the window for probably a year now. Rattles like crazy, but the other guy doesn't know how it's happening. - it's hilarious. I can't stop laughing just thinking about it.

Thank goodness I found this thread - thought I was going crazy. Didn't hear the noise when I had my trunk or window opened, and I knew it had something to do with the door pressure. Thanks for saving me hours spent investigating this lol
