AAaaargghhh!!! Starter issues, 3vze

Been reading up on this.. Had problems starting my 89, 1st gen runner. Clicking sound, then it finally started after many attempts. Got worse till it did not start at all. Went to pull the starter and "Oh my God!! Toyota, you've got to be kidding! I could barely see part of the thing. I decided to pull the entire AC system (which I am selling) and I could then see the starter. It was hell to pull even with the AC removed.
Starter was shot, pop a new one in and click, click. Not enough power to the bendix. Starter works if I jump the bendix from the battery.
I'm guessing the starter relay which is (behind the glove box?)
So, probably looking for a relay , too. Have paypal or trade for:
2nd gen tail lights and mirrors and window swithchs
1st gen wiper linkage ....front linkage
3vze AC setup
email me if you have a relay or reply here if you have insight to this problem.

If its anything like the 3rd gen, it may just be the contacts inside the solenoid. I replaced mine for 10-15 bucks. The first time, I had the dealer replace the starter, but the second time, (7 years and 70,000 miles later) I did it myself. Super easy!
 
I recently had a similar issue with mine, but it was an intermittent problem. mine turned out that the main fuse (80 amp?) had been replaced by the PO with the incorrect one. the correct fuse bolts to the fuse panel, and the PO had just wedged one in there so it made connection most of the time but not always.

I replace the entire starter with a rebuild from O'Reilly, so can't be the solenoid on the starter.

You guys need to read this again. My starter was shot. Popped in new one , thinking problem solved but a loud clicking around the glove box. I have read up on this and it is a common problem with the early runners. So, my starter (new) does work IF I get power to the solenoid via a wire to the batt. The loud clicking could be a sign of a worn out relay.
It is not the fuse.

THIS is why I thought it could be the contacts "in the bendix"

Kid, read the thread. My starter was shot. I bench tested it. So did the parts store. The bendix popped out but it did not turn.
I think the relay is also wornd. It is an auto, 3.0, so the relay is piggy backed to the neutral safety switch. Right kick panel, very loud cllicking.
So, 3.0, starter is new, auto trans. Thought I could find a use relay.
Sorry, should of stated it was auto from the start. Been reading Yota tech threads on this. The relays go out all the time. Just read recently that the auto relay is different.

NO. The starter relays on the 22RE's do not go bad often. Those had been mis-diagnosis. It is the wiring that is the problem with 22RE.
If you can find the schematic for yours, we can check.

Do you mean the relay is physically piggy-backed on the neutral safety switch? or
The relay is electrically piggy backed on the neutral safety switch?
If physically, relay would be riding the back of the neutral safety switch, which should be on the tranny housing. Then how come the relay you hear clicking is in the right kick panel?

The least you could do is positively identify what's clicking and post specific information on your truck. We could not help with that when we may be on the other side of the world from you, and/or have schematic for different year-model truck.

Airdream, email ( [email protected] ) with part numbers. I have an early 89, 1st gen. 3vze, auto. I read about the relays going out on the autos. It makes sense that the neutral switch has to be on before the starter relay works. It's a safety issue. I can hear the relay in the right kick panel area, right where yotatech threads said it would be. I will be digging it out and testing things and will then also know the part number.
I thank all who responded. The details are all here for those auto guys who have starter issues. It is fairly common for the starter relay to go out on the autos., I have 224,000 on my runner. I replaced the starter as stated above. It was done. Not sure if the failing relay caused it to fail but I do have a leaky PS system.
So, hopefully a good relay will help. Hoping it's not a neutral switch problem.

I do not know if the 3.0 auto has a starter relay. If it does, I doubt that the starter relay would be in the cabin. If an engineer working for me indeed put it there, I would have immediately fired him, because it would mean the power for the starter solenoid would have to go a long path from battery, into the cabin, to the starter relay in the kick panel, and back to the engine compartment to the starter solenoid. I think the click i the kick panel is that of the circuit opening relay, absolutely nothing to do with cranking the starter.

However, I am 800 miles from you.
You are in the best position to do the following:
1) Look at schematic and absolutely, positively verify if you indeed, actually have a starter relay and locate it.
2) Crawl in there and see, feel, hear the relay clicking in the kick panel and verify if it is indeed, positively, absolutely the starter relay.
