About to give up

So as some of you may know, I have the "vibration" so here what I've been chasing. It comes in at 64mph. I removed the rear drive shaft and it goes away completely, it's so smooth. So I got a new "used" drive shaft and had it professionally balanced. Didn't fix problem. I was told both rear bearings were bad, had them done, still had vibration. I had all 4 tires balanced again and still same problem. Remember when the rear shaft is out there is no vibration. Someone mentioned the pinion angle is off, someone mentioned the rear being bad. I can't take it much longer, I don't want to drive it on the highway at all. I would rather keep the truck cause I love it but I'm getting to the end unless I get help. I do NOT want to poke and hope! Thank you for your help

I've been saying this in a couple threads but try moving the rear driveshaft near the output of the transfer case. The transfer case output could be loose. Mine was and I tightened it up and the vibration is gone for me.

This worked for about 90% of the vibration in my runner. I'm hoping that replacing my pinion bearings will take out the rest.

bearings will make noise like a growl or roaring wining noise if they are bad, so i dont know why you replaced bearings, who ever told you to do that was a fool and dont take their advice anymore. the things that come to mind are a bent axle shaft possibly, -dis you have any leaky wheel seals? did you replace the ujoint in the drivelines? that could be the issue, as well as the nut on the back of the tcase output shaft as suggested earlier. also are you sure you put the driveline back in the correct way... if you mix up the rotation they will vibrate even with the shaft being perfectly balanced -dont ask me why, but they need to be marked when taken out so they go back in the same way. also if you have paid a shop to fix this, they should fix it and you should not have to keep sending it back for them to fix and continue paying for them to throw parts at it. if they charge you for parts that dont fix the problem then they need to find the fix and at least do the labor for free, if not buy the part, cause the last part they put on obviously didnt do it... if they are a good shop then they would work with you. thats the nice thing about dealers, at least with them you typically get some kind of assurance that the work they do will fix the issue and they will stand behind it and figure it out.

Output shaft nut on transfer case is tight. Drive shaft was fazed correct as per a driveshaft company. All new u-joints. The place I have been going too has been very reasonable and has not charge me full price being what he did, didn't fix the problem.

So what is your pinion angle, then? Too much driveshaft angle at the pinion or transfer case output can cause vibes.

If you've had other threads on the same topic, you might want to ask a mod to merge them? Guys can offer advice better if all the information you've supplied and everything you'd tried to fix it is all in one thread.

yeah your giving us very little to work with hear, you havent told us about any mods to your rig, all we know is its a 96 limited, but does it have a lift, after market wheels, off road tires, do you tow with it, do you take it off road ect. what mods have you dont, what repairs have you done, has it ever been wrecked ect. this is all things of the top of my head that i could think of that would cause a vibration. you cant expect us to pull a rabbit out of a hat here if you dont even give us the hat...

I had a humming and slight vibration noise above 65mph on my 2001 Tacoma 4x4. Turned out it was a main bearing issue in the rear differential (not the small bearing at the axle). Could be your big main bearings inside the differential.

This we must know!!!

Could be something as simple as worn/blown shocks. I've experienced a horrible shaking/virbation @ 65-70mph and I knew in the back of my head what it could've been and just finally replaced them all @ 190k. All new shocks and no more issues.

Let's assume you can eliminate the DS and the rear axle bearings since they have been professionally fixed (though I agree that the bearings wouldn't cause this anyway). All that's left in the rear is the diff, so look there for the vibration.

If the problem is in front of the DS, I would think you would feel the vibration the strongest through the shifter.

The pinion angle should not have changed, if it has, then I guess one of the upper or lower control arms, or the trac bar would have to be bent (or if you are lifted), so check for that. If they are straight, then start looking internal to the diff. you can remove it and put it back on for just the cost of a tube of diff sealant and some gear oil, so maybe try that first. You would be looking for anything amiss, like worn out bearings, or an off-center contact patch on the gears, damaged teeth, etc.

FWIW, I had a very similar massive vibration right around 70mph that turned out to be the u-joint, but you said you already replaced that.

he never said he replaced the U joints, he only bought a new drive line and had it ballanced he has not stated(to my knowledge or reading) that he has done the U joints -if not stated, then not done... at least thats my logic

Sorry for my delayed response as I'm new to this. It is a bone stock runner. It is a daily driver and only taken in the trails and not too difficult wheelin. I have owned the truck for 3 years and has not been in an accident to my knowledge. I do have Hancook tires with a little more agressive tread over street. But I got them 2 years ago. They are not choppy and or they are not wearing funny. The tires are rotated every other oil change. No other mods beside stereo.

Also u-joints are new and the drive shaft is not bent. I'm not sure of the actual pinion angle. Is there an exact angle it should be, is it adjustable, where are the best locations to take the mesurements for the angle. You guys are awesome. Thank you very much for the help.

Hi,

Are you sure about the drive shaft you bought is in good condition? Has it been repaired before? Why did you rebalanced the drive shaft?

Have you tried installing another good drive shaft?

Get Her Rolling

You know what, this could be related to just about anything - right off the top of my head I could name a dozen different things that might contribute to a possible cause of the reported vibration.

Best advice I can give is to get the truck on a rolling road, run her up to (vibrating) speed & pinpoint exactly where the issue stems from.....work on a solution from there.
