Hi everybody. This is my first post. So I just got my 06 black sport edition 4runner with non-jbl radio. I have searched on here trying to find someone with a dash kit besides the one with the two pieces that just go on the side of the dd head unit. Is there a kit that looks better/ more flush like the kit for the people who have jbl. I guess this kit won't work for my application since i dont have jbl. I just want everything flush and to look good. please help thanks! I will also post pics after I get mine installed.

I'm in the same boat - I have a non JBL with the side pieces and I don't like the look either. Maybe it's just the Kenwood DVD's but mine sticks out almost an inch. I've tried the Metra 8210 and that didn't work either. The Kenwood's come with a generic trim piece you have to cut to get it flush but I didn't like that look either.
I have the Avic-D3 installed in my 2006 SR5.
I was worried about the trim piece and spoke to many people about what could be used. I initially went with a custom fabricated piece made of plastic. I took one look at it after the install and told the installer to do something else because it looked bad. The only other option that I could find was the two side piece trim so I went with it.
I'm with DORSKH in the fact that I have received nothing but compliments on my install.

The navigation unit sticks out approximately 1/16" from the side panels. Without examining the unit very closely, a person cannot tell that it sticks out. I could not tell unless I rubbed my hand over it.

I have installed my D3 with the two Metra side pieces and am not too happy with the look. I ended up modifying the hole locations in my radio mounting brackets and the metra kit to get the radio to sit flush in the opening. It is better but still not as good as I'd like. Now that it is flush on the sides I have a small gap (about 1/8") at the top and bottom.
If you come up with a another solution, please share.

It appears that there are mixed opinions on the non-JBL Metra kit. My kit is now over a year old and I am curious if they have made any changes to improve the fit since I bought mine. If someone has a more recent photo of an install I'd appreciate seeing it. Thanks!

I'm just starting to read up on this subject. I want to get the Avic-D3 and put it in my 04 with JBL Synthesis system. When you mention the two part trim, is that the one that comes with the Avic? I check out Metro's site and the 2 kits listed for my year and model both seem to be 1 piece kits.

Trim Kit for 2005 4runner with AVIC-D3
I just got the AVIC-D3 and i ordered a trim kit from Metra...i'm not sure if this kit will fit but i'm gonna give it a try. There's another thread where someone used this kit on a 2005 4runner with JBL...my 4runner doesn't have JBL...his kit looks perfect...i decided to order it and give it a try...here's the link:

Salsa06...it seems like all the 4th-gen 4runners have the same "opening" whether they have Nav installed, or a stock radio with CD. I'm not sure what makes a JBL system any different...for example, my 2005 4runner has a standard radio with CD but i could have gotten the JBL system in the same vehicle...therefore, i think the Metra kit will fit. And i know the AVIC-D3 will fit perfectly inside the Metra kit.
It will take 3 to 7 days to get the kit, maybe 2 weeks before the install is complete...if it doesn't fit, i'm out $21...big deal...can prob use the side(s) from the bracket.

I know exactly what you mean - it seems like they should be the same. If that is the case, I am not sure why the aftermarket mfgr's offer the two different install kits. That's what has me perplexed.
One concern: the JBL radio protrudes further through the dash than the non JBL unit. I am not sure if that is a function of the JBL radio design or the design of the radio brackets - hopefully just the radio itself so we can use our current brackets. Also, I have noticed in pictures of the JBL dash kit that it has a flange around the outside edges at the base of trim ring. I am not sure how that fits into our dash opening.

I am not in too much of a hurry to pull mine out to reinstall (graduate student + full time work and travel = limited time for toys). If I do happen to get to it before you, I will post pics of my experience as well.
