ABS brake light comes on when accelerating

Hey all I have a 97 4Runner 4x4 with abs 3.4 and 5speed and I have a unique situation. I have scoured the forum and have not found anyone else with this "issue". When I accelerate a little more aggressively and go to up shift the abs light comes on briefly. This happens from 1-2-3 and have not noticed from 3-4-5. Fluids are topped off and sensors are clean. Yes I need to replace pads and rotors. Any ideas?

I had something similar recently. You may want to check your brake light switch. My was faulty and gave incorrect abs warnings.

Thanks. It doesn't affect anything on my truck. I assume you didn't have any issues either? Just the light coming on?
 
I cut the abs out and removed the bulb lol.

I have the opposite issue now. Brake light keeps coming on. And off. Just started doing it after sitting for few weeks in cold

I'm not sure I would consider it "opposite", but I recently started experiencing the same thing in my '97! When accelerating fairly aggressively, the brake light comes on for a second, then goes off. Didn't sit for any period of time though, so I'm not sure if that had any affect on yours, or if it was just a coincidence.
I consider it the "e-brake" light, but maybe it doubles as a fluid level indicator- as it does in my GLI. I didn't think to check the brake fluid level. It's definitely not the e-brake switch- I do know that.

Yep, your fluid is low and rocking back and forth in the reservoir

I checked the wheel speed sensors, they're fine. Well. from what I can tell anyway. everything else is functional. I took them out not to long ago to check them and i did have metallic debris on one, but I cleaned that up (didn't change a thing except make the actual brakes not bug out).

So I checked my fluid and it's towards the top end of full...

And it might just be the brakes are old and the calipers are pushed out (pads look like maybe 50% left).

I have all new brakes/lines/etc waiting to be put on (need to get a jack and stands, lol). I'll do a full bleed at that time.

My "educated" guess is that that will do it.

I'll report back.

Are you sure it is the ABS light? When my windshield washer fluid gets low a yellow indicator light starts coming on intermittently as the fluid is sloshing around. The first couple times it happened i thought it was the ABS light flashing quickly but then i realized it was a different yellow light...

Other than that, it might be your 5th vehicle speed sensor... I recently did a 5speed swap on my 97 and in the process i realized there is a VSS on the a340f tranny that works the same way the ABS sensors do. When i removed the auto tranny and also this sensor, my truck started throwing a code because the sensor is not there anymore. Considering the sensor looks and acts the same, it might be part of the ABS ECU... I removed my fuse and bulb for my ABS so I'm not sure if its causing an ABS light as well. Might be worth a shot to clean this sensor as well, its on the side of the tranny and should be pretty accessible and take a 10mm just like the wheel sensors. report back

ABS sucks on early 3rd gens!!
