HELP!!!!!!
This problem started in Mid Dec. I took it to a mechanic who has done lots of work prior for me. He had the truck for a month. He gave me a vehicle to use while he worked on my car. He replaced 2 relays, the alternator and battery. He had tried to replace some computer but found it wasn't the problem. At any rate it worked when we picked it up yesterday. It was sitting warm in his shop when he backed the truck out yesterday when we picked it up. The ABS did not engage at that point. Drove it home yesterday and to several stores with no problem until we backed it into the driveway last night.
While in reverse only, a dash light depicting a vehicle on curvy lines, comes on and the ABS starts engaging. The turn signals quit working as did the air and heat controls. Can't turn on any of those functions. Like I said, it worked yesterday in the warm shop, on the way home, and for a short shopping trip last night until we went to back it into the driveway.
In November when it first happened it was not real cold yet, still mid thirties. Also at that time, the heating/AC controls, interior light, and turn signals quit working at the same time. The interior lights do still work today. And the vsc light is on again.
Again, the mechanic said that he replaced a couple of relays, installed new battery and alternator. He was going to replace some computer and have it reprogrammed but then found it wasn't that. In drive, there is no problem with the brakes engaging. All rotors and pads have been replaced within the last 6 months. I had prior problems with the vsc light being on, but had that fixed in Oct. with the replacement of some sensor. The current ABS engaging in reverse started a month and a half after that and hadn't happened when the vsc was repaired.
I had a stereo with 2 separate amps and a back up camera installed in early November. It is not currently hooked up to the in dash unit yet and the amps are not wired to power at all, but are still grounded. The backup camera is wired with a switch, into the backup lights. The problem showed up a month after that install. The head unit was installed with a harness that was wired into the original stereo wiring. The balance/eq on the head unit quit working properly a month after install. The head unit is not currently installed so even if the harness was improperly installed, it isn't now connected to the unit. I double checked the harness, and the ground is wired to original stereo ground while the power is connected to the acc. on. All connections were soldered and shrink wrapped. Could it still be part of the problem?
I just got back from driving the truck to the mechanic and when I pulled in I shut the truck off. I tried to restart but the starter just clicked yet all the interior lights still worked as opposed to last time this happened. Mechanic is looking now, focusing on a short. Bank won't allow payment freeze on debit card transaction, so I am forced to allow him to continue to work on it.
Could the back up camera be the problem somehow? It has never been hooked up to the head unit. Like I said, it is wired into the backup lights.
Could the amps be the problem even though they are not connected to power but are still grounded?
Could the stereo wiring harness be the problem even though it isn't connected to the head unit?
If none of those are the problem, what could have cause the problem of the ABS kicking in only in reverse?
