ABS Just F@#$ed my front bumper

Well I was pulling into the fry's parking lot and found a handy caped spot. With the plaque already in place. I pulled into the spot no faster than I normally do. The brake puddle pushed back at me and I continued to try and stop the truck. The handy caped pillar or pole (concrete drum) stopped the truck and I am now in need of a front bumper for a 01 t4r that only has 45k. I retraced my previous statement made in another forum, I will not be disabling the trac and abs for off-road use only. THEY ARE NEVER COMING BACK ON.... pic soon when I can get them off the camera.
:dammit:

pic to come after Sunday. first stupid camera is broken and wont let me get pic off it.

yeah its too bad its not my truck and the owner doesn't know yet... she's 75 and blind.. I have to donate plasma for a few weeks and find a stock one:cry2: I hop I can just bend the chrome plate back.

This is odd. Why would the ABS engage? Is it not working properly? I've never had a problem with my ABS.

I am compiling people's experiences to make a formal request for a recall or at least a TSB from Toyota for this issue. Up until now many on here and other forums have ignored and even tried to discredit what I (and a few others) have been preaching for a long time - that the 3rd gen ABS is inadequate, dangerous, and ineffective in many circumstances. And yet it continues to happen quite often, people crash in otherwise completely avoidable situations. We must make Toyota take responsibility for this poor quality ABS design.

agreed.

I too am planning to disable my ABS before I also end up with a situation like Jayzero's. I've already had a few close calls almost sliding into major roads from side streets while trying to come to a stop from a completely reasonable speed given the poor conditions. Haven't really had any problems with it at higher speeds (driving a manual means all winter I'm pretty much just putting up brake lights while engine braking) but anything under 30km/h and I'm looking for the softest snowbank to run into.

So what exactly is the perceived problem? I've had my '97 4x4, V6, 5-speed, E-locker 4Runner since new. It's mainly my winter vehicle, lots of snow and ice, and in 13+ years I have yet to experience any problems or concerns with the brakes.

I've heard many stories of people driving ABS equipped vehicles (not necessarily 4Runners) too fast for conditions, and expecting miracles when trying to stop quickly on ice or snow. The laws of Physics always come into play at that point.

So I'm just wondering if there is a real concern with 3rd gen. 4Runner brakes, or if it's just driver error as it usually is in the cases I've heard about?

I live in Mesa, AZ it was 80 today and dry. So why couldn't I stop in a dry level parking lot into a stop I have parked in more than 100 times.

I don't know, I wasn't there.

Was there oil in the parking spot that the tires might have slipped on? Do you regularly drive this vehicle?, you did say it belonged to someone else. If you usually drive a different vehicle and are used to it's dynamics, you could have been assuming the 4Runner would behave the same and it didn't.

Anyway I'm not picking on you at all, and I'm sorry you have the situation to deal with that you do.

My only point in commenting in this thread is to find out if there is some inherent flaw in the 3rd gen. 4Runner brakes. Because as I said, I haven't noticed one in 13+ years of driving one.

No oil, no water, and no its not "mine" but I'm the only one that drives it and its all I drive. I have noticed the abs engaging at wired times around town, normally coming up on intersections and I have to slam the bakes to get it to stop at the crosswalk cuz the peddle was pushing back but not always and I just let it roll off my shoulder. But today was just BS I pulled in at the normal speed, applied the brake, peddle pushed back, I pushed harder and harder, CRUNCH!

There was no reason for that BS system to come on. and I have pics of me suck on a dirt road cuz the trac was on. THESE SYSTEMS ARE USELESS.

pardon the rage, not directed to anyone but Toyota

My god, it is idiots like you who screw over innocent companies. Just because you may have got a lemon doesn't entitle you to a recall. And that of course is assuming the problem is completely due to faulty equipment, when more often it is caused by a careless driver.

Poor Toyota already got screwed by all those morons who couldn't tell the gas from the brake, the last thing they need is an attack from people who don't hit their brakes in time.

You claim the car has a big problem, yet haven't taken any action to get it fixed other than whine on the internet hoping for a handout in the form of a recall? You really think something should be recalled because of a handful of cases? Do you have any idea what that means for Toyota? That means that even if they did put out a handful of faulty units they will have to pay out of their pocket to replace thousands of perfectly good ones because people will be scared that there is a problem with theirs. This is a huge waste of time, money, and resources.

I made an account on this site specifically to say how much people like you disgust me.

The issue is that even on slippery surfaces, the brakes are still meant to stop the vehicle and that is not happening with many 3rd gens. The ABS engaging would still be fine, but when it actually prohibits the vehicle from stopping altogether (and in many cases it takes all the braking off and even lets the vehicle speed up on downhill surface), that's defeating the purpose of the brakes altogether.

I have an '05 Honda CR-V that has 4 wheel ABS and it stops on a dime and I have never had a problem stopping on slippery surfaces with that car (anymore than any other vehicle). It will pulsate and do it's thing, but the car still stops. My 4runner will just keep going in those same exact circumstances (aka my driveway and several other places). The only things that will stop my 4runner in circumstances like those when the ABS is on are me pulling the ebrake and pitching the truck sideways or running into an object like a pole, a house, another car, hillside, etc.. Now that I have disabled my ABS, I have no issues stopping.

So.. that means the brakes work, but the ABS is hindering their performance far beyond just letting it slip enough to not lock up. It lets it slip enough to cause you to continue at speed and crash.

VinnyM, you are a troll. Go find another site to stir up controversy.

Your hilarious it listen to.
1. I'm not looking for a recall.
2. I have taken action to prevent this from happening again(disables TRAC & ABS).
3. Toyoda got F@#% cuz the cars would accelerate even when in neutral.

So go do some research before you wine about something you know nothing about.:flipoff:

That'd be a neat trick.

I thought most of the "unintended acceleration" issues were debunked?

Sure now I can't find anything on it (will keep looking)
as far as the "unintended Acceleration" issues are refuring to the floor mats catching the peddle. but the recall I was talking about had to do with the sensors in the pedal and the computer. The car would be stuck in the full open slot and ppl would trow it into neutral and blow the engine just to stop. if they were that lucky

Lighten up, Francis

Sure, the OP may simply have a malfunction but that's not a reason to go ballistic on him. I have never slammed on the brakes on our 4r because I'm such an awesome driver :D I never get into those situations to begin with. My GF says the thing stops very well in panic situations though. If the OP has a fault I'd say he was going too fast. There's no way a normal speed into a parking space can totally destroy a bumper.

The unintended acceleration is a real phenomenon though. Here's a guy who drove his Avalon to the dealer at full throttle because they kept calling him a liar or an idiot. http://www.leftlanenews.com/toyota-avalon-displays-unintended-acceleration-without-floor-mat.html
