ABS Just F@#$ed my front bumper

On my way to work, I cross a section of street that gets sprayed with water from in-ground sprinklers.

When I first got the truck, I was coming to the stop sign near the puddles named above, I lightly press the brakes and my the truck locks up the brakes and I skid. I was going no faster than 15mph.

I maybe unhooking the ABS...

That sounds like your ABS is not working at all. ABS is supposed to keep it from skidding. The A stands for anti-lock. In your case, it's doing exactly the opposite of what it should do.

Clearly there are members that have faulty ABS systems.
Mine happens to work good. Not perfect, but good.
I think even when the system is working properly it isn't the best. I get the feeling that the brake pressure to the entire system is being reduced, when it should only be reducing pressure to the individual wheel that it detects is slipping. If only the one wheel that is slipping gets pulsed, the driver should theoretically not feel any reduction in overall braking power, since the three wheels with good contact are still stuck to the road and slowing you down.
I have experienced occasions where the ABS kicked in unexpectedly and the truck took a little longer to come to a stop (every one of those occasions were due to a loose or slick surface of some sort), but nothing resembling some of the stories I have read here and on other anti-ABS threads.
I am not well versed on ABS systems, but I would imagine that the one used in our trucks is not very elaborate. Add to that if there is a malfunction and you have yourself a dangerous braking system.
The problem is that the owners of a truck with a suspected bad system is required to fork out the cash to have a Toyota service tech diagnose the problem, and end up stuck with a gigantic bill for controllers, sensors, ECUs, who knows what. Maybe the only recourse is a petition and a potential recall. They only have to fix the ones that are truly malfunctioning.

That's what it sounds like to me too.

I've always felt the ABS system in my 4Runner worked very well, and have never had any concerns from it. If a situation arises that is similar to some of the personal accounts posted, I'd be looking into and resolving the situation the same day.

Considering that the newest 3rd gens are now at least nine years old, and long past any warranty, potential problems wouldn't be unheard of.

Well, I went out today and drove around on some empty roads to test out my ABS. The roads were wet from a recent rain and I couldn't get anything abnormal to happen no matter how I braked.

i think I'll be sleeping fine tonight.

New here.... Great website. To comment on the abs pushing back, I have had this happen to me. The exact, scientific data escapes me, but that is what you get when you have to much input into the system.... Turning(one wheel is slower) and mashing the brake too hard, combined with weight transfer onto one tire leaves you with a small contact patch and alot of momentum. The rest is fixation on the object you are about to hit and bang.

I am not disputing, at all, the quality of our abs. But just know that when the brake pedal in an abs system pushes back... There is too much going on.
