ABS light

So my ABS light has been on since I finished the install of my OME coils, I think the sensors got dirty. Has anyone replaced ABS sensors? Are they just a plug in and go deal or should I get this done by a professional? I have used the vehicle all summer without ABS and have had no problems, however with winter coming and a baby on the way I would rather stop than slide.

Thanks in advance for your input and help, I searched and it looks like the majority think ABS is crap. Should I fix mine? What do I need to do to get the light turned off if I choose to go without ABS?

My ABS has almost caused me to crash in the snow and on the trails more than a few times. I pulled my fuse a long time ago and it's way better. That said, I think some people's ABS isn't as sensitive and seems to work better than others'. I can't see anyone feeling safe with the ABS in my particular truck. At times it would even disengage the brakes momentarily during the pulsating and the truck would actually gain speed! I just live with the light on, but if I felt motivated enough I could pull the bulb out of the light on the dash.

I understand where you are coming from, while wheeling this summer my 4r would stop on the steep dowhills (brakes would lock) where in the past the pulsating would let me keep going. The problem that I have is on the ice, this spring I was in Vail and the parking lot was icy, there was a slight downhill in the parking lot to a lower level and my tires locked up and I slid and couldn't stop even when pumping the brakes, not sure tha ABS would have helped in that situation but in the past it had helped on the ice. I am kinda torn wether I should fix it or not. I am used to not having ABS from driving older vehicles and I usually pump the brakes out of habit anyway.

FWIW, the ABS sensor is a magnetic design, not optical. Not sure if getting it dirty can even mess it up.

IIRC, there is a single bolt holding each individual sensor into the axle housing (one per side). They come out pretty easily. If you didn't take them out when you put your coils on, then I would be concerned maybe you pulled a wire loose or something. I have no idea where the wire to each sensor terminates.

ABS has its place. Just not offraod, imho.
