ABS light

Hey All,

Great forum!

Need a bit of help.

Working on a buddies 2000 4Runner V6/Auto. Installed new front inner/outer CV boots and rear inner axle seals. I now have an ABS light on. Not sure if it was already on. I tried jumpering the E1/TC ports, but only get the cruise light to flash, not the ABS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be happy its on. NO MORE ABS. Mine took some work to get the light on


check the fuse. its a 50A or 100A fuse and its bolted in place in the fuse block.

Thanks for the response! Would rather no give it back to him with the light on. It has a 60A fuse and it doesn't appear to be blown.

Sounds like one of the speed senders crapped out. Maybe pulled on or disconnected. Check all speed sensors. If they all look good, then pull out the ohm reader and check each one.

They all appear OK. Do I need to remove them to check the OHM reading or just unplug? What values should they be? Would a bad sensor cause the cruise light to flash instead of the abs? Confused by this.

Thanks Singtoe...it ended up being a stretched right front speed sensor wire (actually both wires). Soldered & heat shrinked new sections of wire and no light. Cleared code, test drove and no codes.

I am resurrecting this thread in hopes one of you can help me. I replaced my rear axle seals and my first test drive is showing my ABS light on.

I will admit this...when I was changing the inner seal, I removed the speed sensor (as suggested in the BigFishAllDay writeup), and had a bit of trouble after that...when I was replacing it after the seal was done, it wouldn't seat back down all the way. So, I got it close, and didn't really want to bang on it, and figured once I started tightening the bolt, it was become flush. I then proceeded to break the bolt off inside the shaft. So, off to Ace to get a metal drill bit the right size (all the ones I had were bigger or not for metal), to assist my screw remover tool. So, I drill out the remaining portion of the bolt deep enough to seat the screw remover and am able to get it out. I bought a replacement M6 bolt at Ace and then reinstalled everything. It seemed to be OK.

How can I test the speed sensor itself? I heard mention of an ohm meter...what am I looking for and how would I go about that without tearing it up more? Are those easy/cheap to replace? It didn't look like it came off easily (if at all).


Any other thoughts (besides, jeez, he's stupid)?

Side note...if I can't get this solved immediately...what are the risks? I know some guys on here disable the ABS entirely, but I'm not looking to do that. That, and I hate idiot lights on my dash.

I have 4Runner 97, to get the ABS to flash, I have to remove the Jumper Pin (toward the front + engine side), then short the E1/Tc pins. I don't know if this apply to 2000 or not.

I took my bulb out. And removed the abs wires from the rear axle. What abs ?

I have the same problem. Weather looks good to attack that the next few days. Then I'll plan to post something if I get any results.

Do some searching, I posted the links to reading the ABS codes off of the ABS light not too long ago. I just don't know if it applies to '96.

Believe me I am searching as much as I can, I just don’t know if I am doing it wrong or trying to diagnose wrongly. Everyone I read about was able to get ABS code by shorting the E(1) and T(c) pins together. Mine just blinked once( I heard a click when it blinked) and then stayed on while the cruise started flashing.

Make sure you are actually shorting the correct pins. When you remove the lid. Don’t confuse your orientation! I did at first. Double check that!

Did you also remove the short pin? You have to do both.

I did remove the short pin, and I double checked the pins. Is there another explanation for this behavior?

So I kinda feel like a dumbass but I found my ABS issue. Whenever I removed all the stuff behind the dash to change out the wiring harness I must have put in the wrong ABS controls module. I thought of this yesterday and swapped them out and everything works as it should. Thanks to all those who helped me though
