ABS ring on 2004 4x2

is the ABS ring integrated with the bearing assembly on the front end of an '04 4x2? Or is it a separate part?

bumped and edited for brevity. From the number of posts around here about the front bearing/hub assembly there's got to be somebody that knows.
 
It's integrated. It doesn't have the gear looking ring that sits on the interior side of the bearing.

If you buy an assembled hub (from [MENTION=100129]nj636[/MENTION]) or elsewhere, you'll have everything you need to swap out the bearing assembly.
 
Great, thanks! Didn't want to spend all that $$$ and take it apart to find out I was missing something and spent money I didn't have to.

Is it common to damage the ring when doing a hub/bearing job? Toyota dealer told me it was the cause of some ABS misbehavior and my wife had taken it to a local tire shop to replace it about two years ago (before we got married and I took over car repair duties).
 
No, not a common thing that I'm aware of. I think it's more likely that the ABS sensor wire harness itself would be damaged if the mechanic tugged on it too hard. You unclip the connector from the old assembly, remove the old hub, install the new hub, then reattach the wire harness to the ABS connector. If the mechanic forgot to unclip the wire harness first it might have been damaged.

Reach out to forum member [MENTION=100129]nj636[/MENTION]. He sells assembled hub assemblies for right around $160 that are of good quality and ready to bolt on. It shouldn't take more than about half an hour per side with no special tools required.

common if they are rebuilding the hub assembly (these shops are animals)

My assemblies come 100% ready to bolt on and are 100% new and hassle free.

Well worth the peace-of-mind knowing it is done right and the satisfaction of doing it yourself :)

This is what I found when I swapped them out. Holy moly, they weren't kidding when they said it was damaged. It was also soaked all over in what looked like anti-seize compound. Time will tell I this was really the problem but if it does turn out that way, I'll be taking this back to the tire shop that did it and seeing if they offer a refund for the work they did since I had to redo it.

wow! I can't understand what the deal is with those 4 punch holes... It looks like it was hit with a drift, but the way the metal has sheared makes it look like it was hit from the opposite side that would be necessary to free it from the spindle...
 
yeah, all four have definitely been hit from both directions. If they struggled getting it off then fair enough, but at what point do you mangle something to the extent that you just get a new one instead of putting it back together and giving it to the customer that way?

Since I bought the bearing/hub assembly from nj636 I didn't have to do the separation work and don't know which parts come with a new bearing and what's reused with the hub...does that ring come with the bearing or the hub? Said another way, is that the ring that would have been on it before they replaced the bearing and has to be reused, or is that a ring that came with the bearing and they mangled it putting it back together?
 
they obviously didn't have the SST to remove that nut. Some shops will use an air chisel to remove and reinstall the nut -- how can you torque the nut to 203 ft/lbs with an air chisel :noidea:
 
wow, that's exactly what it looks like! Good (and scary!) point on the torque. I'll be sure to ask them about that when I go in.

Unfortunately my wife lived 130 miles away when this happened so it's not like I can just go up there during my lunch break. We'll be back in town visiting family on the 29th so I'm going up there then.
