Took a day trip to Sequoia Nat. park yesterday with the fam and decided while there to try out the abs in the snow. I don't drive on slippery surfaces too often in So. Cal. so I took advantage to try the abs and see what everyone complains about.
Everyone is right the abs systems on these suck! After making it activate a couple times though the brakes stuck. I tried to go backward in reverse and the truck wouldn't move. Going forward it would move a little but felt like I was dragging the rear end. I'm pretty sure the rear brakes were locked up.
I tried hitting the brake peddle and it was rock hard, wouldn't budge. I thought maybe the cold weather/snow possibly locked up the bell cranks but that wouldn't make the peddle hard. Also the parking brake felt normal.
So I just started driving slowly and after a hundred feet or so the brakes loosened. Then after another 100 feet they seemed to release completely again. I did not have any trouble with the brakes the rest of the day after that and I did not activate the abs either.
Doing a google search I found a BMW forum post and a guy was describing the exact same thing. I think possibly a valve in the abs module stuck and kept the brakes locked up..? What do you think?
I think it's time to snip that wire and disable abs permanently.
