absolutely dumb ass question

This is my first 4wd vehicle. It needs some love. It's getting the love and now it's giving me some shit. I bought a 1990 with a rebuilt engine and going to be doing the clutch tomorrow. Figured I'd muck about with my 4wd shifter today and actually got it to move about and corrected some stuff. Now I'm stuck in 4wd which is annoying as all hell to me. Yes it's a 5speed manual, no automatic for this person.

How the hell do I disengage the 4wd? I move the little 4wd shifter into what feels like neutral for it and well still in 4wd when I try to move the vehicle slightly and the light still says that I'm in it.

Yes, I'm a newbie when it comes to this crap. Only ever just had 2wd and on american vehicles. Thought that this might be an easier better route to go.

Also if anyone has a boot for the engine for this model year or around there I'm up for trading things or just buying it off you out right.

Not sure how the 2nd gen 4wd shifter is, but is there not a spot for 2H on it? You should be able to put it in 2H and roll forward and it should disengage. If not re-place it back in 2H and back up for about 15ft, that may work as well.

You don't want the 4wd shifter in N, you want it in 2HI. It's a standard J pattern shifter - N is at the bottom in the middle, up and to the right is 4HI, above that is 4LO, up and to the left is 2HI.

Figured it out. I just have a shifter, nothing on the top of it. Had to goof about with it to get out of 4wd. At least I know it works again Clutch should be replaced by noon my time tomorrow. That leaves only a few "major" repairs and most of those I can do myself which I'm thankful for.

So the big issue I'm going to have is that Toyota doesn't make certain parts anymore. The big one that I'm going to have true issues with is the boot that goes from my air flow. Does anyone know of any after market parts for pre 96 runners for this? Or if I find one that's a bit hard how I can soften it up after ripping it out of a junk yard?

Make a post in the wanted section on here and check at junk yards. Will probably be your best bets. I would find a stock replacement for sure.

I'd look first for somebody parting out a truck. Then check junkyards (Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market is a good resource for this). Failing all else, get a silicone boot. They aren't cheap, but they're much less likely to wear as they age.

Have a link for the silicone boot? At least I'd have that book marked if the two I'm going to visit this week don't have what I'm after. I can easily keep it running for now but that part is going to need to be replaced in the next six months.

Alternatively, if you know where the tear is in the boot, try Rescue Tape. That stuff is awesome.
