AC Help

I need help determining if my compressor has went out! It was making strong noises (that would sometimes deminish or fade when air was on.) There was some fog that came through the vents, then the air went warm. Can't afford to take it to a mechanic at this time, so I need to know what I need to do. Thanks!

I think the valve or AC evaporator is shot.

Try to see any bubbles in the AC filter glass. You got to have the AC on to see it.

Usually these compressors run for a life time of the engine.

Do I need to do anything special, or simply turn on the air...I didn't see any bubbles when I looked earlier!

I just had to replace my compressor, but I'm not sure the symptoms you're describing add up. Try spinning the belt and pulley. If it spins freely and doesn't make any noise you're probably ok.

The fog makes me nervous...freon? A good shop will be able to pressure test the lines to see if you have a leak.

Are you mechanically inclined? If you can't change the spark plugs then this is not a repair that you want to tackle.

Anyway, It sounds like your compressor is bad. Strange noises usually mean bad things.

On another note, The fog that was seen was a sign of low freon levels, which could be from a leak on the compressor. This is a best guess though.

So, I am not sure what type of an answer you wanted but there is no band aid to fix what ails you. It will take parts and how much of it you can do by yourself will save you money.

I mean as far as DIY I know enough to get by, like changing oil, tire, ect... The pulley (I assume, with the belt around it) is spinning...I checked my fuse, it was blown...as soon as I replaced it, it blowed! It's making almost like a grudging sound...don't know if this info helps!

Is the compressor spinning. (Inside the pully). (When the ac clutch is off it will not spin)
