AC starts in re-circulation mode

It does say that. It also says that is in "Max A/C" mode. Max A/C is the only switch position that will allow this to happen, in other words.

I always make sure it's not on "Max A/C". This is why I was suspecting that the switch maybe defective. However, it it's the case for everybody else (or so it seems), this is probably by design.

The manual, however, specifies that this is the behavior for "Max A/C". Go figure...

I read the manual. I went out specifically to check it. If the air conditioner button is on, no matter what temperature, it defaults to Recirc mode. You can push the ReCirc button to pull in fresh air but you cannot change the default start position. Max AC position or not the thing starts in Recirc mode.This is different from the 2010-2013 models.

Unless I'm not looking in the right place, I don't see it - the manual specifies that it's how it's supposed to work when "Max A/C" is selected (see page 278):

Now, given that what you're saying is precisely how it works for me, I am leaning toward the fact that I'm not looking in the right place in the manual somehow.

Can't speak to prior years, but I can tell you with 100% certainty my 2015 does this. I don't mind because if I am using the A/C I am stuck in traffic and want to keep as much of the diesel fumes out of my lungs as possible.

I stand corrected. I just checked mine and it operates as 1engineer and Blitzkrieg said. It even reverts back to recirc if you leave the fan switch in the on position and recirc off.

I double checked mine to make sure I wasn't nutso (at least not in this instance, lol) and mine works as I stated previously...wierd!

It's that evil ugly new nose. The airy-dynamics are so screwed up they had to re-program the A/C!

I checked my 2011 TE today; it works as you described.

Mine functions just as you described [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION]!
If I take it off Recirc and stop the engine, when restarting, it will default to Recirc when not in the MAX AC position!

Yes, this is what I mean. It, luckily, doesn't revert back to Recirc after switched to outside air - it it did, I'd be seriously pissed - but it always seem to start in recirc if the engine is turned off while AC is on. I even took a video to make sure I am explaining myself correctly.

The manual specifies this behavior for "Max A/C" mode, but, I guess, it's for both. I'll probably check with the dealer just to make sure. Since it appears to be the case for most everybody else, I think I know what they'll tell me

I don't think it always starts in recirc if I just turn it on while driving, but I would need to check on that.

So, I stopped by the dealer today. They didn't know, of course, but they confirmed that a few 4Runners they had in the back did the same thing.

Basically, the official answer I got from a Toyota Certified technician is "That's how they probably are programmed to do. I am not sure why"... Case closed

I am running around with a loaner car this week, a toyo camry...and it also starts its MAX AC in recirc mode...


if that helps...it seems to be a programmed thing...

It pisses me off to no end that I have to reach over and push a button to open my glove box.

Why in the f**k can't Toyota put a button next to the one that answers the phone when a call comes in that will open my glove box without me having to reach over to do so?

I'm also sick and tired of those cumbersome windshield wiper/turn signal stalks and those archaic door handles that one must use to open a door!

Sorry to revive an old thread, but wondering if anyone has had success in disabling the default recirculation setting when the vehicle is started? I'm referring to the section described on page 282 of the manual:

"When the outside temperature exceeds 75°F (24°C) and the air conditioning system is on, in order to reduce the air conditioning power consumption, the air conditioning system may switch to recirculated air mode automatically. This may also lead to reduced fuel consumption. Recirculated air mode is selected as a default mode when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position (vehicles without a smart key system) or the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smart key system)."

I currently live in Houston, where the temperature is above 75°F 11 months out of the year. I've been trying to figure out why I've been getting sub 16mpg for the last 6-8 months with a stock height and wheel size TRD Pro. Mpg's dipped about the same time I gave up turning the air recirculation off every time I start the vehicle. Please tell me there is a way I can disable this silly setting

Not at this stage can you rule out this stupid setting.
Older models around 2010 should be able to shut down.
And I am annoyed but there is no such option in my 2016 limited.
In this manual it says it can for older models.
