Acceleration Hesitation

I had this same problem in my 2010 4runner when I purchased it new in late 2009. I had the ECU re-flashed per a TSB about 9-12 months later and have never noticed it again.

I also had the drive-line BANG when stopping at intersections or after releasing my foot from the brake.

They replaced the entire drive shaft per a TSB under the drivetrain warranty about two weeks ago and this problem too disappeared.

Which dealer did you take it to may I ask? I have the same thing and a couple of minor items that has a TSB on it, bit the dealer or tech refuse to do anything. All they say is it not there when we test drive it. My 4 runner has 30k on the clock also a 2010 Limited. By the way, its the seat clicking when I brake. It drives me nuts to have that little cracking going on back there.

^^I'd suggest that you go for the test drive with them so you can point out the issue, better yet you drive so the tech can devote his full attention to detecting the problem. As for the seat there is also a TSB for the lumbar support making noise.

They only do something if they see an issue with the TSB? Is it truth that they wouldn't replace or repair anything they can't detect even with the TSB already out? Thanks

In my experience, unless they can detect the fault in the TSB, they won't do a "repair". The dealer has to ship the faulty part back to Toyota, so if they can't detect the issue they are not likely to do any work since it counts against them if they sent back too many non-faulty parts.

I work down in Cali near Vegas. Maybe I've mentioned doing some wheeling in the Mojave in the past?

I just got a flat there last year turning around on a road. Pathetic. Now I have Goodyear Duratrac E rated tires. That better not happen again!

Yeah, Davis is fun. Small, but fun. At least we don't have the bay area or LA traffic to contend with.

I enjoy roaring up on the bikes and giving them a good scare though.

I have a 2010 SR5 that has a pronounced hesitation when driving around town. It seems more pronunced after slowing down from say, 45mph and applying the break down to about 10mph and then re-accelerating. There is an annoying lag in the engine response. I can feel the accelerator go down but it takes a second for the engine to come to life. All other engine/tranny performance seems normal.

Has anyone else had this problem? It is subtle, but annoying after driving around town all day.

P.S. I am very happwy with all other aspects of the 4Runner (except for the rediculous iPod menu interface controls

I have the exact same problem in a 2015 4Runner we bought last Sept 2014. It is DANGEROUS! It happens mostly when the car is coasting around a corner and I take the foot off the gas pedal. When I reapply pressure to the pedal the acceleration lags horribly, sometimes to the point of no power at all and I have to pump furiously several times to get power to reaccelerate. If there's an oncoming car when I'm making a left-hand turn and I can't get any power the oncoming car could hit me on the passenger side.

I've already taken it to the dealership to have it serviced @5000 miles. The tech told me he could feel it on a test drive and they hooked up some sort of computer to it while I drove. They kept it overnight, but the next day they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I'm not surprised. They have to deny any trouble in order to protect themselves. I will take it back in again shortly (8000 miles presently) If I get the same runaround I will tell them I plan to file a "lemon law" claim against them.

Hi, I’ll try to revive this thread rather than start a new one. I have. ‘15 SR5 and it has a little over 50k miles. We returned home from vacation today driving about 500 miles, mostly on the interstate. At our last stop, when I tried to crank it, it turned over then stalled out. I tried again, keeping the ignition turned longer than normal, and it started but took longer than normal and shimmied a little bit. Also, when accelerating from a stop it would delay for a second or so. Another time, I slowed down quite a bit in traffic and had to accelerate and it was a very slow response. Any ideas? Battery? Something else?

I’m pretty concerned...I bought this vehicle based on its reputation for reliability.

I'd start troubleshooting in this sequence:

1- remove any pedal modulating mods (I.e. sprintbooster, pedal commander...etc)
2- MAF sensor cleanig
3- fuel system: clogged? Dirty? Failing pump? We did see these symptoms with a bad fuel filter in a Tacoma
4- spark plugs
5- run some cleaning additives in the tank

Ok, so I don’t have any mods (that I know of...I bought it used). So I tried to take a look at the MAF sensor. I found a part that is referenced as the MAF meter, and it looked OK to me. I’m gonna try to post some pictures.

I can’t imagine it needs spark plugs, and I messing with fuel filter/pump is above my pay grade!

When I started it today it stalled out. Then I started it again and it almost stalled, then the RPMs shot up, almost stalled then RPMs shot up, and kept up that pattern, getting a little more stable each time.

Guess I’ll let the mechanic take a look at it!

After inspecting the MAF sensor, I took it to O'Reilly and had them test the battery. It showed the battery was good but some kind of voltage test failed, which would indicate a problem with the alternator...makes sense. They also hooked up to the computer and there are no stored codes.

However, since I was having the acceleration hesitation problems, I got a fuel treatment. I drove to a gas station, put in the fuel treatment and topped off my gas (I had a little more than 1/3 of a tank prior to topping off).

No more problems at all. Cranks strong on first try, no hesitation when accelerating, no knocking noises when accelerating.

Could it have been as simple as that? I still don't know why the battery tester at O'Reilly would have indicated a failed voltage test.

What fuel treatment did you use? Some are great and some are snake oil.

took my 2012 to the dealer when it was new with the complaint. they told me is is due to all the lawsuits from people claiming that the car took off by its self so if your foot is on the brake it kills the throttle. I told the mechanic it was very dangerous in a left turn or changing lanes as the car will not go and it scares the heck out of me. I have been looking for a solution for a long time online and have found none. Today on the freeway i changed lanes safely in front of a semi and the car would not go and i almost had to clean out my pants. I have hated this car since it was new as it is also the most uncomfortable car i have ever owned and you can not read the radio or gauges in the daylight. the car is a piece of crap but i am stuck with it.
