accelerator stopped responding now truck wont even start

Hi All,
I have a 2003 toyota v8.

Yesterday I started it up and it was idling very erratically. I could drive it along but the accelerator was not responding, it was just chugging along on the erratic idle.
It then stopped completely and wont re-start-. It doesn't try and turn over at all.

My mechanic cannot get any codes as the machine shows communication error, he also believes this is backed up by the fact that when you turn the key , the dash lights up but the check engine doesn't light up.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated-so far he has looked at it and says fuses, battery are ok and he reckons it will be the computer at a 1000$ replacement. The vehicle has 340,000 km so i am not sure i want to go spending that much when i am not convinced that will remedy it.

are these interference or non interference motors? if it is, well then when you tried to restart it you killed some valves. i hope its not since most toyotas are not.
(if the timing belt is the problem)

If it was the timing belt, wouldn't I still hear the starter motor trying to kick in?

Sorry I am not sure what you mean by interference or non interference motors?

Yeah, it would still try and turn over even if your belt broke and your dash should be lit up like a Christmas tree.. Interference engines, like the one you have, means that the valves and pistons can/will hit causing the valves to bend if it is out of time. This happens when the timing belt breaks or is installed incorrectly.

Your issue sounds to be more of an electrical one though. I'll do some asking around to see if I can give you any ideas on where to start.

He can't connect to the vehicle? Did he check all the fuses as well as power and ground at the DLC connector? If power and ground is good on the DLC then the next logical step is communication between the ECM and DLC connector via the CANBus, which could possibly hint at an issue with the ECM itself.

I think my mechanic is getting to the same solution -i.e. the ecu (ecm).

he tested all connections between units and fuses and says all are good. i have found a used one on ebay for 130$ so am going to give that a go

I had the same thing just happen to my 04 V-8...but my OBD gave me the code which came up Throttle Pedal Sensor. It would start and run crappy but when I replaced the gas pedal ....it ran like a champ. I dont remember the code number but found a used one on ebay for $50. Easy fix.

It's odd that it just crapped out on it's own... Hopefully the new ECM will work; make sure your mechanic can handshake the ECM to the Immobilizer module, otherwise the vehicle won't start (Then again, if the new ECM plugs in and starts communicating on the CANBus that pretty much tells you it's the ECM anyways.)

Do you by any chance happen to have anything aftermarket that could be on the power supply circuit for the ECM?
