Add A Trans Temp Gauge to Cooler Line

I do a some towing and a lot of off roading. I want to add a dedicated trans temp gauge inline with the cooler. I also am going to add a second, external cooler. Which line should I tap into for the gauge? It's a 2009 with the 1gr-fe.

Lots of opinions on this but feel the pan is the best location for temp sensor (and always have done them there). IMO that's going to give you the best overall reading of what's going on. Of course it requires dropping the pan and welding in a bung so if you don't want to do that then 2nd choice would be the cooler pressure line so you see the hottest temp. An argument can be made for the cooler return line that you are seeing how effective your cooling is but that's not telling much about the real fluid temp in trans. My .02 worth!

Scan Guage II works for me. You have to enter the code from the website if I recall correctly.

I've had the SGII for several years and only found the codes for trans temp recently. It works like a charm.

I believe it takes the reading at the torque converter?

Toyota Must have changed something in the software in 2009. I tried all of the codes I could find for the scanguage II for trans temp, but no luck. I even went to the thread here and tried every single one. Even went to the scan gauge website. No luck. As for drilling and welding the trans Pan, That is a big NOPE for me. I know the cooler line won't be as accurate, I just want an idea of the temps. I know about the idiot light, and I know I have gotten the thing hot, but never over heating as the light never comes on. I think it comes on at 230, but not sure. Id rather know in advance before the "Hey Stupid, Take it easy" light comes on.

Save your money and buy a bigger pan or cooler. If you're set on it, the thermometer only belongs in the cooler return line.

I put a autometer trans temp gauge in a pod o my steering column. I put the sensor in the send line to the cooler. It works perfect and definitely lets me know when I am playing to hard in the mud or sand.

I believe it only works with ScanGauges with firmware 4.06 or later.
Check your version , if too old I think they offer upgrade service for $25 , just need to mail it to them.

I bought a cheap Bluetooth obdII scanner/guage for 15 dollars. Then I downloaded the torque app for 5.99. It has the transmission temp on real time data along with all sorts of info. I can also scan codes and reset them on the go. Only downfall is that the tranny temp is in Celsius. I once tried an different code that someone said would convert it but it didn't work so I just know what it runs at in Celsius.
