Add on remote starter (uses OEM fob)

So the deep freeze has me itching for remote starter options. Googling and Amazon came up with this :

Anyone have any input on these? Plug in / tap in module and voila, remote start by clicking the lock button on the fob 3x?

No reviews on Amazon or vendor site.

I put one from that brand (which uses the tried and true Fortin module) into my buddies Sequoia a few weeks ago. He is happy with the performance. I do recommend getting the t-harness for the ignition section of wiring (ax-on-ttoy1 or 2, not sure which one for 4Runner)

I dont think there is a plug and play kit available for the 4th gens And im pretty sure that link you supplied is just universal parts. I would contact [MENTION=237463]Accessorides[/MENTION], they are a vendor on this forum that make remote start kits, they might have something.

those system, you are limited in options, i would suggest doing a full compustar install, if you want range and other stuff. you can get it off ebay and install the 2 way 3000 ft system, also get the key bypass.

but if you dont know much about alarm install, i would go to the store and pay the 500+ dollar for the install and lifetime warranty on certain parts.

I looked there. They don't have a kit for 4th gens.

are you looking for just remote start or full alarm and remote start? its only a few extra wires that need to be hooked up.

I just need something to point out the door to warm up the rig before putting my son in. Lots of laws against unattended vehicles these days. Don't really care for range. But you are correct, for the price of these questionable kits, might as well just go pay for a 1 way starter. Will just have to suck it up and carry 2 fobs.

I want to say I read somewhere that once you start the vehicle with this kit you can't unlock it unless you put the key in the door. It doesn't seem like a huge issue but it would bother me enough to go a different route.

Yeah I just saw that in the fine print. It disables keyless entry while the system is on. Makes it an inconvenience since we only have 1 key hole on the driver door.

1st world problems.

Oh well, worth the research.

I wish Directed's DBall2 could be used with our gen. I wired one into my 2015 Jetta and it was easy and awesome. Used the factory remote.

I just installed the Fortin Evo One system with the T-Harness and only had 6 wires to splice. Very simple install but you have to buy a flash updater to flash the module. I also bought the RF remote kit with 2 remotes and 3500 feet range. These remotes also give me an audible sound that it communicated with the vehicle and then flashes green on the remote to say its running. This system is remote start and keyless entry. Very happy with it. $315 for everything from Crutchfield. This was on my '05 Runner.

Don’t know if the aftermarket systems do this, but we opted for the Toyota factory system on my wife’s last Camry (very expensive option!), but it would kill the car as soon as you opened the car door! That pissed me off in a serious way because most internal wear comes from starting the car! Why the hell should you have to start it AGAIN before driving it! Makes no sense because the lock button was what started the car, so it isn’t like someone could just hop in and drive away without a transponder to open the door! I almost had it done at the dealer the last time her current XSE was in for service, but they told me it was around $600 to add!:yell: Not sure if they could alter that “stall feature” in Techstream, but if they can’t I’d never want their system again. I would like to install one on her car though (and my 4Runner) if I could find a fairly easy to install one. No need for alarm.

Oh, and I definitely don’t want a second remote! I like to travel light without a massive bunch of crap in pockets beyond what I HAVE to carry already.

for me, we all have compustar, i only need to carry 2 remotes, and 3 keys. i have the same system installed on my dads truck, with my fob, i can control his truck also, the 2nd fob is for the camry, i have that separate since one remote can do 2 cars, as long its the same system installed.

now the newer stuff should have a up to date firmware that allows take over feature for those smart key system.

I'm partial to the Crimestopper starters. I've had them in my cars for close to 15 years. I have yet to put one in a Toyota but I have done multiple Hondas and other cars. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't run one off the OEM fob which is what I did on my daughter's Accord. As mentioned you either have to use the key to get in or shut the remote starter off first and range is awful.

I'm thinking of putting the one below in my 4runner which would allow me to use the fobs on the one I recently put in my wife's Odyssey. That one was simple because it has CAN bus but no T-harness available so a bit of hacking. I put the 2-way model in which has amazing range and you don't have to see the car to know it's running. This one will unlock the car while running even though the OEM fob will not but it unlocks all the doors.

Two bits of advice, if you can get a T-harness it saves a ton of time. Anything you have to splice into go the extra effort and solder them in, the quick connects fail after awhile.
