Added another 4Runner to the fold....(pics added!)

Just bought a '97 for my sister! SR5, 3.4L, 5-Speed manual, 4x4. Only 90K miles!!! No locker, and few options...about as base as the SR5's get. However, it's very clean, and did I mention only 90K miles!

We don't have it yet, but I'll post some pics once we have it in our possession. This makes three 3rd gens: Mine, my brother, and now my sister. Mom and Dad both drive WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited's. Strange huh. :)




EDIT: We did NOT buy the above mentioned 4runner, it was sold out from under us. Instead, she bought a 1997 Limited, Auto, 4x4, E-locker, 232K miles, 1-owner, awesome maintenance records.

I'm smarter than my parents too, lol :P

Sounds like a great 4runner! I wish my sister would get a 4runner, she likes her escape for some reason.. :shrug:

Yeah, we've a got few plans right off the bat.

-Removing the running boards
-Adding front mud gaurds
-Adding a factory roof rack
-Putting my 5-star alloys with 265/75 Revo's on
-Maybe color match the grill



That's probably it for a while. I bet we'll eventually do a small lift ('99 coils probably), and some more aggressive tires.

Well, little update!


We still added a 4runner to the fold....however it's not the one I posted about initially. That one got sold out from underneath us after we'd agreed on a deal. :dammit: Not the coolest thing, but crap happens and I'm not holding a grudge.


So, since she still wanted a 4runner, there was another one I'd been eyeing and we went ahead and got it! Here's the specs:

1997 Limited 4x4 Auto
-Desert Dune w/ silver trim and flares
-E-locker (woot-woot!)
-232K miles
-Every single maintenance item performed with receipt from the day it rolled off the lot. One owner.
-Never wrecked, no body or paintwork.


It's a slick rig! Even has upgraded springs (probably 99 coils...they are from the dealership, sold as TRD performance springs....who knows). I haven't added it all up yet, but I'm pretty sure there is at least $10K in receipts for all the work over the years.



We're gonna take the running boards off, and put my 5-star wheels with 265/75 Revo's on. I'll take some pictures this weekend!

Quick question for you guys:

This 4runner has never had synthetic oil in it. It has 232K miles on it. Religious maintenance. I run synthetic in all my vehicles, and so does my dad. We're the ones that will be changing the oil in this 4runner, so normally we'd do synthetic. However, I've never switched at this high a mileage. Anyone have a bad experience by switching to full synthetic? Ever? I never have, but I'd like to hear stories if anyone has. Myths and rumors asides...I just want to hear your non-synthetic vs. full synthetic stories....

The oil forums mostly agree to run a bottle of Auto RX through your rig prior to switching from Dino to synthetic :)
 
I just did a little research on AutoRX, and went ahead and ordered a couple bottles. Thanks!

Just realized I forgot to take pictures yesterday when I looked the truck over for the first time. It's really nice, I'm impressed for 233K miles.



The 4wd system works just fine, however: the Rear Diff Lock will not engage. In 4lo, I push the RR Diff Lock button, and it will only blink. I never hear it engage, and it just keeps blinking. Driving forward and backward slowly, etc....nothing helps.

The original owners never used the Diff Lock, except maybe when they first bought the 4Runner just to see what it did. lol. Which means the locker might not have been used AT ALL in the last 8-9 years. How do I go about freeing it up and getting working?

Try driving in tight circles.

Wow, the PO chromed the stock split 3-spokes! Never seen that before, but it looks nice. It looks like it sits as high as yours so it probably does have '99 coils like you're thinking. Tell sis congrats!

Yeah, he had the wheels dipped right when he purchased the truck new. I'm sure it looked cool for a city cruiser when they were new, but they are garbage now. Literally. They're going in the dumpster, and my 5-star's with Bridgestone Revo A/T's are going on instead.

Actually the springs are Performance Products, made by H&R. I found the original reciept when they were purchased. I love them, they' at least as tall as my '99 coils, and they ride great. Kinda lucked out with that aspect of the rig.
 
I've heard good things about the PP springs. I think they're no longer in biz now, but they made good stuff when they were around. That '97 will look dope with the 5 stars.
 
Don't throw them in the dumpster, if nothing else, take them to a metal recycling facility, you can get a little cash for the aluminum :)
 
Yeah, you're right, I won't throw them in the dumpster. They are in much worse condition than they look like in the pictures though. The chrome plating trapped alot of corrosion, so they are pretty rotten.

No luck. I can't get the e-locker to engage no matter what I do. What's next on the trouble shooting process?
