Take the diff apart, clean it and change gear oil.

No luck. I can't get the e-locker to engage no matter what I do. What's next on the trouble shooting process?

Check the electrical connectors on the actuator. Make sure it's getting the signal to engage.

If it is, try tapping the actuator with a hammer (with the locker engaged).

If that doesn't work... get a bigger hammer.

I'd also go w the blue wire mod to rule out the 4low sensor. Plus when you do get it working it will be real convenient and only take 5-10 min to do. It allows you to lock the diff in 2hi/4hi as well.

And wow that thing looks familiar, at least how mine started out! Bone stock. Very clean though, nice.

Don't throw them in the dumpster, if nothing else, take them to a metal recycling facility, you can get a little cash for the aluminum

Well, I just found out it has a leaking axle seal as well. Probably because the breather is plugged. When we do the seals, the fluid will get changed and we'll look at the actuator.

looks good dude so i have a newb question and not trying to hi-jack just thought id ask since its in ur pic... in the center of the rear rim u can see the axle portion that has a twist thing on it; do all 4runners have that? to me it looked kinda like a locker or something but was jsut curious since ive nvr seen that discussed.

No, that's just the center of the hub. It doesn't have any twisting feature...must be the way the dirt is on it. Normally you can't see that at all, because of the wheel center caps.

Looks great. I just did the same thing, 265/75 on 5 spoke 99 wheels. Removed the running boards and removed the rubber piece off the rear mud flaps. What a difference a few simple things will make.

Definitely! My sister came out of the house after I trimmed the mud flaps and took the rb's off...and she was like, "wow, it looks SO much better!"

How many miles on your '97 rj?




Here's a list of what we did to it yesterday:

-Replaced front and rear diff breather plugs and extended the rear
-Oil change with AutoRX
-Removed running boards
-Trimming mud flaps
-Installed 1" wheels spacers
-Installed '99 5-spoke wheels
-Replaced rear hatch struts
-Cleaned MAF and throttle body
-Detailed interior



I noticed that it doesn't have a factory skid plate. Guessing it broke or the bolts rusted off. Since my sis isn't going to offroad it enough to need one, we'll probably just leave it off.

I also noticed that the transfer case is covered in gear lube. Leaking somewhere...hopefully and easy fix.
