Here's my story: Wanted to add it to my '86 which did not have a/c from factory. I got what I thought was all the parts and it always ended up being "one more part". There is an elusive pigtail connector that hooks up under the glove box. Make sure you've got that and they change the shape for that sucker every few years (not all 1st gens the same).
The other tricky part is that the compressor bracket mounts through one of the bolts on the timing chain cover. Do you want to pull a bolt out of that perfectly sealed cover? May be fine, may not.
Next is the true pain: Supposing you also got the button (a/c) and sliders from your donor car, you think you're good to go. Not so. The duct work underneath is totally different in one that has a/c versus one that doesn't. So yep, either tap into your inner Plastic Man, or pull that dash and reroute everything. Very little online info about this.
Conclusion: I spent a ton of $ and have all of the required parts (compressor, pigtails, o-ring conversion kit, condensor, duct work, button, control panel, etc., etc.) And it sits in a box in my shop. Has for over a year.
I so dreaded this job that I've decided I don't need a/c.....and I live in TEXAS! I'm not afraid of turning wrenches either, I've done a full rebuild on this 22re and do all of my own mods and maintenance.
