Adding a Remote Start Kit

My Silver TE is due to arrive from Jacksonville tomorrow. Finally the wait is over....

However, it doesn't have remote start and I'm interested in adding that feature. Has anyone ever added a remote start system to their 4R. Particularly the TOYOTA PART # PT398-89100 version?

I found one on eBay for $339.95, just didn't want to be the first guinea pig...

If anyone else wants to pay for it and send it to me, I'll be glad to report back my findings with detailed descriptions and pictures.

i have been looking at this kit as well and i have been told that it is all plug in but after it is installed the dealer has to do something to the computer of the vehicle, I guess they have to turn something on in it to allow the remote start system to work. If you decide to do it please post what you find out.

I put a simple Viper system in, installed professionally. It was around $350 and Toyota wanted $550. The only drawback to date was the program module from Viper says it will work with the '10....but it doesn't, you have to use the valet key. That was 3 weeks ago and the tech said that the updates change daily, so it may very well in fact be available now.

BTW the system works as it should and I'm very pleased with it.

i have a viper installed on my 2008 4runner. it took the valet key too. it was 350. don't do anything at the dealership after you purchase the vehicle because they like to charge you for things you don't need. i installed a new cabin airfilter and put my initials on it and wrote down the part # the day before i had a 30k service done. they told me that it needed replaced and they had replaced it. so i took the cabin air filter out and showed them my initials and the part # and somehow my entire service became free. oddly enough the service tech that did the service couldn't be found when i wanted to talk to him....LESSON....DON'T HAVE ANYTHING EXCEPT A GENERAL OIL CHANGE DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP

I had Toyota install the remote starter kit for my new 2010 SR5 4Runner. However, the dealership installed it, not I. It works alright, it integrates into your keyless entry fob so it only works at a distance of up to 80ft and when you unlock your car or pop the hood or rear hatch it turns off and you have to start the ignition again.

Nice point....I'll be remebering that one!.....:wow2:

The installer did say that when the module became available he would be willing to swap out the key at no charge. He mentioned to call once a month.

My installer just gave up on the keyless module, cannon something. A couple days ago he ended up using the module that uses the valet key. Should have done that from the start.

No third valet key w/ the smart key system; just the two fobs w/ manual keys inside of them. I wonder if you'd have to use the manual key to open the door after using the remote start or if it would just unlock once the fob was in range.

download the misc section and in there is the dealer instructions for installing the remote engine starter unit. When you download it, the folder it is in is called "Accessories Installation". The file name has remote engine starter in it. Just choose the one based on if you have the smart key or not.

I believe if you're driving a Limited and have the smart key system you only get the 2 keyfobs. No separate valet.

I'm having an OEM remote start installed tomorrow that I paid for as part of my original truck purchase. Unfortunately the first module they received was defective, and I had to wait a bit for a new unit to come in.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'm not disappointed with the range on the unit or that I have to start it again after opening the doors.

These long, cold walks through the Pentagon parking after a night shift would be a lot nicer if I knew my truck was pre-heating for me!

Just had the Viper Smartstart system put in my 2010 TE. Both the phone and remote work great!! The remote fob has amazing start distance, and well the phone option has unlimited distance. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of putting in a starter. I did look at the Toyota starter, but in Canada the dealer wants $500 and I paid $700 for the smartstart and alarm system combo!!!!

i had a VIPER 4203 remote start installed, also a "PKALL Bypass Platform" was on my bill....local custom-shop guy ive used for 10+ years...total was $359+tax.

i have a 2010 SR5 with regular 'key' (not push-to-start)

i had called two dealers..both quotes for factory install were ~$725...i was not aware opening the door killed the engine with factory starter..that would be unacceptable to me.

the Viper 4203 has a Very, Very Tiny one-button fob...i press once to start (can be set-up for 2-button presses to start, so u dont bump it accidentally)...i get a visual led/lights and audio beeps on the fob response that the signal got to the vehicle...the vehicle parking lights flash and stay on too....i use the same fob button and press once again...to unlock the doors (if they were locked)

No valet key was required to stay in the car...they just needed both key fobs at time of installation (i suppose in order to program something)

I am also interested in the viper 4203. I have a 2011 limited 4runner. Quick question: when u start your vehicle using the Viper do the doors remain locked? I have a push start starter. Im worried that the doors will automatically unlock when starting my car using the car starter. Do the doors remain locked when the car is started?

i have a SR5, and the simplest 2-way viper (responder one), it does not change the stat of the doors.... if you start the car with doors open then they will remain open. and if you start the car with doors locked, they will remain locked. Viper disables the original remote entry system and you will have to open the doors(if locked) using the Viper remote instead of the original Toyota one.
