Adding USB port for indash audio

Hello all,

I'm looking into getting a new radio for my 04 4runner. And I saw these on a video. And I wondered if it's possible just to have one port instead of the second charging port. The reason I ask is because phones today seem to be rather picky on how much power comes through the cord. And I want it to be as seamless as possible because I'm going to an Android auto radio.

Thank you for the response. At this point I'm going to be modifying a smoker kit. I'll be taking out the lighter fixture and replacing it with a USB 3.0 port for the stereo.

That is a good upgrade, there have been a few people that have done this here. I am looking to do this after installing the new Scion IM '16 radio. However, you ar correct in that there are some usb ports that are picky with the phones. I know when i rent some cars it causes iPhone to go ballistic. Also, note the power output that you will get as well (Amps). I use a cigeratte lighter usb that is pulling 2.4Amps good for short trip charges.

Post pics and install when complete.:pop2:

I will definitely post pictures when finished. But I can show you what the thought is at least currently. I'm by no means an expert when doing this stuff. Cosmetic things aren't my forte at least on interior stuff. But I'm patient and I learn quick so here's hoping to a decent job [emoji28]

I bought a similar usb unit, except mine also included an aux port. Anyhow, I put mine in the glove box. This way I can leave it plugged in and not have loose cords flopping around. Just my preference.

Yeah I get that. I almost considered just putting it in the pocket with the regular receiver attachment but I want to be able to keep it next to the shifter for convenience.

Update. Installed the usb port into the lighter port and was surprisingly easier than I thought. Only took 10 minutes. I'll be doing everything else tomorrow.

Got it done with minimal issues. The temperature was to blame for most of the issues. Sweaty hands don't hold on to things too great.

very nice! Where do you get the actual panel insert for the 'smoker kit' I have the one that is a door that hinges open and the lock that shuts the door is broken anyways so I'd like to replace it.

What dash kit did you use for your install? I have that same radio and the kit that came from Crutchfields interferes with the volume knob.

I have the one crutchfield supplied. Something I noticed was the holes I needed to use were extremely hard with the screws provided since they weren't very deep. You may have put the kit in the incorrect mounting holes. I almost did that myself.

I bought the same one. If you are reasonably handy with a soldering iron you can easily change the blue LED to amber to match the interior lights. Makes it less bright and fits in. It is easy to disassemble.
