ADH8796 4runner Build

Good lord, looks badass on the 37's...

Try resetting the ECU and see if the speedo comes back, a few people have gotten away without doing the VSS as long as they retained the rear tone rings

Alright my speedo worked fine for the first 500-600 miles of the swap and now it's dead. I guess I'll need to get a taco VSS to fix the issue?

I lost my speedo/odo after the full float rear. You should already have a usable speed sensor on your transmission. Run it thru a speed calibration device, which will also adjust for your 37's. No additional sensors required.

Your truck looks badass! Nice work.

Thanks I'm loving them they just seem to fit better.

Alright I'll give that a shot and see what happens.

So you think the speed sensor is fine and I lost my speedo/odo because it's not calibrated? I'm just confused as to why the speedo would work fine even though it wasn't callibrated and now it's dead. Maybe it's just now picking up on the fact that the front two wheels are gone?

Also I plan to follow your lead and go full float rear or possibly a different axle all together at some point in the future but I guess I could worry about the new VSS then.

Thanks man I'm enjoying it so far hope to make some more wheeling trips soon.

I believe the ECU recoginizes the difference in wheel speed (F vs R), gives off a P0500 speed sensor code, and you lose the function.
There is a speed sensor on the transmission. It's only stock function is to prevent you from shifting into 4wd over a certain speed. Nevertheless, a speed sensor is a speed sensor. It is a 2 wire sensor and is identical to your deleted wheel sensors. It is not reporting to the speedometer, just the ECU. Tap into that sensor for speedo/odo function and the ECU is happy. The digital box will allow you to adjust for any wheel tire/gearing difference. My speed/odo is spot on, and matches GPS speed/odo. Pretty cool.

I love how the steering links are high and tight and out of the way. Nice. I've spent more time than I care to admit, laying under my truck, trying to visualize where everything would go with different setups.

Ah makes since now. I'm a little slow when it comes to electrical. I'm placing an order on the box now. Thanks for the help and a great write up.

Wow, Anthony... Just wow.

Thanks buddy it's getting there still have to beef up the rear links and I'm leaning toward the full float kit but that's a little ways down the road. You up for a wheeling trip soon?

I'm always up to wheel.. Got some maintenance to take care of first. I think the guys are wanting to wheel the weekend after thanksgiving.

Cool keep me posted I'd like to tag along.

Scott and family seem to be heading down Friday (22nd). If I can get away that day I'll come but I dunno yet since the weekend before thanksgiving (23rd) I'll be in Jonesboro for duck open weekend, and the following Saturday (30th) I leave for Kansas City for 3 days. So if the g/f doesn't have to work that Friday (22nd) I'm sure she'll fight me to hang out that day lol.

Hopefully going on a day trip to hit up some trails sometime next week but in the meantime the wife and I decided to get out and enjoy some of the fall weather and colors. Snapped a few pics while we were out.

A buddy of mine was really wanting my tundra brake setup for his 3rd gen so he made me an offer involving some cash and a slightly used PSC hydro assist ram. It's a 1.75"x 6" PSC Assist cylinder. Should have it in the next week or two and then I'll have to figure out where I'm going to put it. I'll also have to order some high pressure lines as he doesn't have any for it. This should make turning the 37's in the rocks a bit easier.

Okay I'm gonna be completely honest here, I didn't even know this SAS was going on until the 4ROTM nomination and all I have to say is....WOW.

Love the attention to detail, love the backyard ingenuity, love the stance, love the wheeling pics.

Out-fricken-standing work.

How in the world did you keep it so low with a panhard bar and steering??

Yeah I haven't been real great about keeping this this build up to date and when I started the swap I knew I wasn't going to have time to update anything until it was done If I was going to get it done on schedule.

Thanks for the complements. Glad to see you finally got yours driving around. I'm looking forward to your front driveshaft being done and some wheeling pics being posted.

As for keeping it low well that was a lot easier said than done as you could imagine. I knew I wanted it as low as possible so once I got my radius arms tacked in I brought the suspension to full bump. I noticed I still had a few inches of clearance before my steering would get into the the oil pan so I chopped my lower ORI mounts down so that I'd have about 1/4" possibly less of clearance between the steering and the oil pan at full bump. After that was done I took a grinder and ground out a small dish in the top of the diff to clear the curvature of the trac bar (didn't take much). Anyway I basically made it as low as possible with the stuff I wanted to run. Only way I could see getting any lower would be to move the upper coilover mounts farther into the fender/engine bay, run low steer, and build a custom trac bar that bends around the diff. Either way I'm really happy with how it turned out 22 1/2" from frame to ground with 37's is 1/2" shorter than my goal was so I have no complaints.

I used these I think they are 6mm 0.25g but I really don't think it matters what size you use as long as you have the correct number of oz per tire. I don't here them at low speeds. Only time I hear them is as I'm coming to a complete stop with my windows down and head out the window listening for them. In other words noise is not an issue.

Great Idea. I have seen, granted this was over 10 years ago, log truck drivers use golf balls inside their tires.

Man that is a great build. I just spent the last 45 min reading every page!

Hope to see you guys next summer. I should be moving back into the AR area. I am originally from Norman, approx 45 min west of Hot Springs. My wife and I are planning on moving to the Fort Smith Area.

Thanks I really enjoy messing around with it. Awesome hopefully we can do some wheeling. Just hit me up sometime.

Will Do!

Would it be okay to PM you directly with questions I may be having with parts, lift and etc? This is the first vehicle that I am going to be lifting. I am planning on doing most of it myself since its not too difficult.

Future plans are...
Timing Belt
Tune up
Deckplate

Some type of suspension for @3"
Tires, 255/85 (for the 33" I really like the way these look)

Thats the big stuff. I am buying my buddies welder and will make my own sliders (I liked the look of the ones that you did)
I won't pay money for new links or a panhard bar. They look way too simple to make. I am going to have bumpers built when I get home (a guy that works for my dad is an insanely great welder/fabricator)

Im looking forward to going wheeling with a group when I get back to AR

Took a day trip this last Sunday to a newish park in Pineville, MO with a couple buddies. I ended up puncturing a sidewall on one of my new tire (thank goodness for road hazard) and put a couple small dents around the rear window from leaning into a tree. My buddy in the other SAS'd 3rd gen broke out a head light, rear side window, and cracked a tail light. The 4th gen got away with just a few good chunks out of one of his tires.

Taking a look at the beadlocks and 37" BFG Red stickies my buddy just picked up before we headed out of town.

Made the trun out of the trail above and saw this hill. It's hard to tell in the pics but it was quite steep and very wet but we gave it a try for fun anyway.
