I'm going to be replacing my dash cluster soon and was wondering if it's possible to advance the mileage to match what the 4Runner currently has?

This thread is so sketchy.
when replacing the cluster have the internet cluster shop set the odometer to match the old.. if not you can get into some trouble ..

LOL...I believe that is exactly what he is trying to do!!!
no he is not going to do it , he will have to get the supplier to set the odometer.
this is done all the time. usually you send in the old . you select the new with whatever color of lights etc then they set the odometer to match.
no details on where its coming from .. so ???

The DMV here told me you can have your cluster set to whatever you want without any trouble. It's only an issue when selling the vehicle, if you are not honest about actual mileage.
And FWIW, I am interested in doing the same thing on a '99 cluster.

Do we honestly think anyone is who is messing with their odometer is going to report it to the DMV? I think this thread should just be locked & deleted.

I have found posts and writeups about swapping in Tundra and Sequoia gauge clusters for the wider array of factory gauges, but nobody jumped to these conclusions of malicious and unsavory character.
And besides, he is asking about rolling it forward to match his existing mileage. Other than I suppose an inherent distrust of any odometer alterations, I can't think of why you folks would see this as malicious.
He is, quite literally, asking "how can I be more honest?"
I am not saying I wouldnt be skeptical if I were buying this vehicle, but am I missing something?

I had two spare clusters and when the trip portion broke I matched a spare speedo odo with the broken one I pulled out.

I don't think this particular guy is up to no good. But yeah, IMO info like this should be hard to come by for obvious reasons. Same deal with how to "fix" your ignition lock cylinder and similar items of interest to less than honest individuals.
That said, I recently swapped the cluster in my Volvo. At the time I got it, the cluster and the car actually had similar mileage, but I put off doing the swap. There was 25k kms difference (in my favour) by the time I got around to it. I just wrote the mileage difference and the date in sharpie on top of the cluster and installed it. Chances are I'll be the last owner of that car either way. Also, there was a 10% difference between the rear axle ratio of the donor vehicle and mine, so at some point it will equal out!

where I live the odo reading is documented at the yearly DMV safety/emission testing/checking. that info is in the computer records. then the insurance company uses that data to adjust the rates. if you do less than 5K miles a year the vehicle insurance cost will drop on renewal. etc..
so if you had 100K on the last inspection and now the odo says 5K miles that will cause a problem because now the DMV and the insurance company will know but others as well. everyone can find out how many miles on your vehicle.
this may not be true in all states ...or countries in the world.

Also that. In Oklahoma (and I would assume most states), they go check your Odo when you renew. Obvious discrepancies thus appear on your records, including Carfax.

Not here, we don't report mileage except for on the title when selling. Odometer fraud is rampant, so unless you go back to the DMV records on the plates there's no way to tell your mileage. The smog guys record it but they won't look back to see what it was. You'll see members from here in CA asking for a carfax report on here from time to time.
I just don't think it's a good idea for us to be posting information on how to change your odometer that's just wide open for anyone to see via a google search. Much better to be done via a PM or email.

Well my 4runner isn't ever going to be sold. I want my odometer to properly reflect the mileage. Here, mileage only matters up to 125k, so I'm well past that. So, if you feel that you need to PM me with the info I need rather than posting it, then please do so.

I missed what style odo if it's in there thread so here's a couple of cents based on mine:
I did the same thing as 1993.4lsr5, Didn't want no stinky 77,xxx miles on my 96's beautiful 261,611 at the time odo but my trip odo broke and that's what the donor part had on it. Now I have working trip odo paired with the original mileage odo. PM'd you.
