so the odometer is in the data base of the DMV inspection stations, and the insurance companies.

I missed what style odo if it's in there thread so here's a couple of cents based on mine:



I did the same thing as 1993.4lsr5, Didn't want no stinky 77,xxx miles on my 96's beautiful 261,611 at the time odo but my trip odo broke and that's what the donor part had on it. Now I have working trip odo paired with the original mileage odo. PM'd you.

After doing all the messing around and repairing the broken trip meter I discovered the the trip portion is removable. (If that's all that's broken) I do have a thread somewhere on fixing it.

Oh it's definitely recorded in places, the problem is there's no checking that goes on when a vehicle is bought or sold. That's why odometer fraud is so easy here.

And to the OP, I hope I wasn't coming across as accusing, I just mean for future google searchers that put in "how to roll back 4runner odometer" looking to do unsavory things.

You might be able to swap the odometer portion of the cluster. Don't know how the earlier 3rd gen clusters look inside. I bought a new cluster for my 93 f250 (so I could more than speed, water and voltage gauges) and I swapped my odometer portion so the mileage was good. My truck has 114k on it and the cluster only had 387k.... guess 460s are about the only engine that will last as long (or longer) than the yota 3.4L.... :hiding:

I also helped a buddy swap a new cluster in his xj, he wanted the mileage to match so we just hooked a drill up with a pencil in the chuck, eraser end out, and stuck it in the back where the gear for the odometer was and went to town, I don't think it would roll backwards, only forward. May be an idea.
As far as legality, at least in Texas, odometer reading are largely irrelevant, but you can roll an odometer to match the correct mileage for a vehicle. There's no law here about making it match. It is illegal to roll it back and not disclose it, obviously. YMMV.
