On March 19th I had the rare (for me) opportunity to go to Mt. Laguna during a significant snow storm. It had already been snowing during the previous two days, so there was 6-8 inches of snow on the ground when I arrived, and more coming down.
The trees were decorated with a heavy blanket of snow that turned stately pines into fanciful Christmas trees:
Oaks and other deciduous trees were transformed as well:
Winds were light, and I was able to make numerous flights with my drone. I flew it over, around, under, and between the snow-draped trees, often while snow was still falling, and captured some truly epic video footage and stills:
I went home satisfied with the both the experience, and the amount of great video I had shot.
Then...DISASTER!!
I couldn't find the microSD card that had all of my best footage from the drone! Somehow I had lost it after putting in a new card. All I had were the last two, brief flights that were on the new card.
Two days later after most of the snow had melted I went back to the place where I had removed the full card from the drone. This was on a little-used driveway to a private observatory. I searched through the remaining snow and ice that still covered portions of the asphalt, but no luck.

Since my last post we had another storm that brought some late-season snow to the mountains. This gave me a second chance to get some decent drone footage, and now I've finally completed the video...

Nicely done Ray! Great shots.
I imagine the added challenge in filming with a drone in a forest instead of in the desert. The sequence when encircling a tree while increasing altitude is great. And the other one while transiting from foggy to sunshine is also great.

Thanks! Yes it can get tricky flying in a forest. Especially circling a tree -- you have to estimate how close the other trees are, which are often out of frame.

Hi Ray, I don't know if you've seen this guy's channel. He explores inside and outside of mines including Nevada. His newer episodes include drone footage and he used to own a gold mine so his descriptions of mines, ore and equipment the miners used is really interesting. Yeah, he's a Jeep guy but I forgive him for that LOL! Enjoy!

Hi everyone! I haven't been on the forum for several months now, partly because I've been super busy and partly due to some painful tendonitis and a wrist injury which have limited the amount of time I can use the computer.
Anyway, in late July I took my annual camping and photography trip to Nevada and the Mojave desert. I saw a lot of fascinating ghost towns, mining camps and other historic sites; plus some incredible scenery and wildlife.
I'm currently working on the many videos from the trip, featuring numerous historic sites as well as some stunning scenery and wildlife. This is a slow process for the same reasons mentioned above. Here's a little preview of what's to come:

Come along as I visit a fascinating cinnabar (mercury) mine on a mountain peak in Nevada. This mine features an unusual ore bin and two-levels of trestles, built on a rocky cliff. I spent the second night of my trip near this mine and got some spectacular time-lapse shots of the night sky.
