Advertised spring lift amounts always seem low..

Bought a rear coil from a outlet spec'd for my 10 year old 4runner that claimed an "average" lift of 1.5"s. Once i installed um i ended up with darn near 2.25"s of lift. Contacted the outlet and they stated that the average lift amount they claimed was for a new vehicle and that it doesnt take into account suspension sag. I asked, then why are you offering these coils for a 10 year old vehicle and claiming a 1.5" l

So, given my circumstances is this a lesson to be learned that you can always expect more lift from a aftermarket provider than claimed? Are there too many individual variables surround a single parts application making it more or less a crap shoot?

They're right. Everyone's amount of suspension sag will be different so the results will be different (the too many variables you refer to).
The figure has to be based on a set reference, ie stock height.

Also, any new springs will settle a bit after break in.
