Advice and seeing how this is looking to everyone else

2001 T4R with 216k miles.

I have come to my stopping point for the night in my quest to replace my valve cover gaskets. I have most of everything removed minus the drivers side valve cover gasket and will be installing everything tomorrow. I do have some questions to be answered.

1) Any time I move the electrical harness it breaks. All the attachment points that the harness has on the valve covers no longer secure it. Is this an issue to just leave it there?

2) Curious to how my manifold and throttle body is looking compared to others?

3) How is are my heads and cover looking compared to others?

Everything under the valve covers looks good. The oil in the intake isn't the end of the world, but you might consider replacing the PCV valve and cleaning the throttle body/intake while you have it off.

The harness breaking apart happens to everyone doing this job. If you pre-taped it before really pulling on it, you could have kept plastic pieces from falling all over the top of your engine. You can replace the old plastic harness with some flexible harness tubing that is sold in bulk in different diameters at auto parts stores.
 
Looks good, and the electrical harness breaking is par for the course. I wasted too much time trying to salvage it, next time I would break it up at the outset and plan to replace with split wire loom.

I hate to ask now since you're about to button things up, but will you be replacing the cam plugs, and applying new FIPG to the half moons? Those are the common leak points, so it'd be good to do that now since you have the covers off already.

Ya, I was able to pick up the FIPG from toyota yesterday, but I either miss placed the cam plugs or never ordered them as this is something that has been planned for the past year. Was able to pick up plugs at Napa yesterday as well as Intake gaskets because those are looking rough as well. I was able to unskrew the cover bolts by hand without effort so hopefully that was the leak, but will still be replacing plugs and seals.

If you are replacing the intake manifold gaskets (lower one), I'd recommend running a light skim of fipg or grey permatex around the water ports on both sides of the gaskets. These gaskets are a pain in the butt to replace so it's worth it to take precautions so you don't have to do it again (Like I may have to)

2) It's a little dirty but pretty normal. Changing the PCV valve and the hose that goes from the valve to the throttle body will help clean it up.

3). Heads are in good shape, but you are changing your oil when you are done right? That oil is as black as night, or maybe it's the photo. The top of the valve covers is normal, don't worry about that though.

The brittle plastic on top of the engine is a PITA on our rigs. When I did mine, I vacuumed all the plastic chips up (along with the acculated dirt) and wrapped the wires in "rescue tape" which can withstand very hi temperatures. (See the post below) This was a few years ago and NO ISSUES!

I plan on going back in to do some more clean up as I was pressed for time due to having to be at work next day. Will for sure have to do this.

Probably the pic. Garage is fairly dim and flash was on. Due for an oil change though. PCV valve was replaced but was unsure about that hose. Sounds like something to put on the shopping list.
