Advice: first trip to the dealer

I'm going to take my 2004 SR5 V6 to the dealer for the first time and I wanted to know what I should get checked (besides the oil change). I don't sense any big problems with my truck, except for a clicking noise in the engine. This happens when I accelerate. The faster I go, the faster it clicks. It's like you are "flicking" the edge of a playing card. I've been told that this is a known problem in the V6s. Can anyone tell me how this can be fixed and if it is covered by the warranty?

the clicking noise sound like its coming from the rear left of the hood as your sitting in the drivers seat i take it. i had the same noise in my 94 and 98 4runner v6's. its more pronounce the colder it gets outside and when at idle, and barely noticeable when you press on the gas pedal. from what i remember, its the fuel injectors or a solenoid opening and closing that is making this sound.

in your case its the opposite situation, but i think it may still be the fuel injectors opening/closing rapidly or a solenoid. try looking under the hood and see if you can isolate the clicking noise. put your hand on some of the solenoids under the hood and you may find your culprit.

Hahaha, nice.

Well, do you recommend I go somewhere else? I'm just afraid that someone is gonna mess up my truck. Not that it wouldn't happen at the dealer. Are there independent businesses that work only on Toyotas or 4Runners for that matter. FYI, I live in San Diego.

I would still like to know what I should get checked on my first maintenance visit.

When it comes to the dealer you really need to stop being so paranoid. The whole point of a dealer is to keep you happy and have you come back many years later to buy your new car or earlier for others.

The whole point of a dealer is..........to make the most money, and they are very short sighted IMO.

From many first hand experiences I would say to always have your guard up when dealing with them. That is why many call them the "stealer" I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw my 4Runner.

personally, it depends on the dealer. i have a good relationship with my dealer salesman (only one i deal with), dealer service rep (a good friend i have know for 10+yrs). and for when i need to take it to another 3rd party shop (firestone), there is only one person i have work on my toyota's, since he actually drives a toyota and has one for his wife. i have know him and his other 2 brothers, and i only let him or his family work on my toyota's.

luckily i have been fortunate and have found trustworthy people to work on my toyota's over the years. anyone probably can back me up on this that has found a mechanic that they keep going back to over and over again.

I own Toyotas and do most of the work on my trucks myself so, thankfully, I've never had a chance to develop a relationship with a dealer's service department. The parts department is a different story, but I still have to bring in someonelse's quote for them to give me the best price.

Stealer .... I agree with that one . . .

Not all shops are honest. If you have a good one, hold on to it.

In the event that you have a good repor with your dealer is great. Like the one used to deal with which serviced my last three Toyota's. However, All it takes is one boob in the service department, and BOOM .... Your screwed out of $6,100, you have a hate hate relationship in the service department & entire breaking system is shot to hell. And then they hit me with over- charging $290.00 on parts too! Might as well make it hurt!

Hate to be so anti-Toyota, but my time with this 2003 has been the worst. Plus, West Corp. Toyota will not stand behind their products & service. Since the dealers are just agents working for Toyota, and since the one who screwed mine up is a Pres. Recognized Dealer, I had to prove ALL damages.

If you know of another certified Toyota repare shop, I'd go there. According to the State Of California Dispute Program rep that I dealt with, if you go to another service provider, and they can give you a clear description of what is wrong, and what it would take to fix it, take that info to Toyota with you to "Help them figure it out."

Good Luck.
