Advice needed on top hat replacement

I got the TRD FJ suspension kit and am lining up all parts needed before I start the install.

We bought a 2015 TEP with KDSS less than 1 year ago with 17k on it. We now have close to 30K but most of the miles were highway driven.

Should I re-use the factory top hats or buy new ones? I do have access to a spring compressor so I can use either of the installation techniques to get this kit installed.

Thanks, Ken

Check the hole that the piston shaft runs through the top hat for uneven wear. It should obviously be a perfect cylindrical hole without any evidence of the shaft rubbing a deformity into the diameter. With how relatively new the truck is, it's unlikely in my mind that the OEM suspension had much time to shift out of place which would cause uneven wear to the rubber but the possibility is always there.

As long as the OEM hats look in decent condition there's no reason you can't reuse them- however it's also a small cost to get new ones.

I bought the KYB tophats so I could build up the struts beforehand. Then hopefully, it’s just an easy swap.

Yes, That is what I was considering doing. I haven't watched the youtube non spring compressor method yet, and I do have access to a lift to do the install.

Would the KYB prefab make the job a lot easier?

Not really if you’re an experienced mechanic with the right tools. Sounds like you’re in a good position.
