Advice on buying a 2000 4runner

I found a 2000 4runner Limited 5 speed manual 4wd for sale by me. Its very clean and came from Texas. The guy just put a new clutch and tires on it. My question is how much should I pay for it? He's asking $4500 but it has 256K miles on it which seems very very high but it's in very nice shape.

Does the owner have any other maintenance records besides the clutch? The value of these vehicles seems at least in part to be determined by what part of the country your in. As an example I paid 3,800$ for a 2000 SR5 3.4 auto with 260k miles here in FLA. The selling point to me was that the owner had 10yrs of records and the truck looked and drove quite well.

If it's in good shape I would jump on it especially with it being from Texas. If it was for sale here in Texas he could probably get $5500 for since it's a 5 speed.

Well I have a badass!!! All recorded maintance for 7k here in Texas. One owner for sale with 206k.. Immaculate condition.

If he has records like I do, than a hell of a bargain.

If not it's a gamble like any other used car buy.

He showed me Dealer records dating back over 100K miles. The truck was always dealer maintained and at 200K miles the dealer put a rebuilt tranny and rear end in it and just last month put a new clutch in.

For what it's worth (if it helps) I just paid 4K flat for a 1999 Limited with 198k on the clock. New timing belt/water pump and plugs/wires, fluids done at 192k with paperwork. Was a Washington state truck it's whole life, has zero rust. I would have walked if the second owner wouldn't take anything under 4K flat.

Had a P01710 code, cleaned the MAF well and haven't seen the check engine light in almost 150 miles. Runs like a top

Sorry it is a SR5 model it just has Leather interior and Color matched Fender Flares so I assumed.

I don't think you paid too much. What part of the country are you? Some people might think you paid too much but 5 speeds have gone up in value whether people like it or not.

I would have paid extra for a 5-speed. But finding a supercharged 5-speed in CA is extremely difficult, they get snatched up so fast. Some never even go up on Craigslist, classifieds, etc.

With good maintenance records that price is pretty reasonable.

At that mileage you're probably going to want to do shocks and springs at some point, but that's a ride quality issue, and can usually be done at your leisure.

The other two big items that come to the top of the list are lower ball joints, and the timing belt. The ball joints aren't hard at all if you DIY, but the timing belt is a little more involved. To get the belt done at the dealership will run about $1200. If you DIY you're into it for about $300-350 in parts (using the good stuff).

I'd probably try and talk him down a couple of hundred dollars, but if he's patient he'll probably get full asking price for it. Manual transmissions are getting harder and harder to find in decent shape.
