I’m planning to purchase a 1st gen TRD SC for $1700. Is that a fair price?

That’s for a new 2nd gen version (or 3rd gen depending on your view). The maintenance is far different on the first gens (as well as available parts) thus making them worth quite a bit less when it comes to resale.

Is there a preferred or recommended gen of sc for the 3rd gen 4runners?

2nd gen for sure Nose cone can be replaced easily and is still available for a good price. But that’s not to say you should avoid the 1st gen.

Seller says the 1st gen sc was recently rebuilt/refreshed and came off his 2000 4runner. He didn't have a chance to re-install it, because he wanted to buy a new motor first.
He mentioned the nose cone needs to be filled with sc oil and was planning to get new needle nose bearings installed in the future but didn't get around to it. Other than that, all other bearings were replaced with the ebay kit. Is $1700 still a decent price for it? Is there anything else I should check with the seller?

I'd definitely say that helps and puts it closer to the asking price. Did they do the work themselves or have it done professionally?

Only if he can provide the receipts. Otherwise there's a chance that it'll rattle at idle.

Thanks. I've asked the seller to send me the service record or receipts. He thinks he still has them and will send it if he finds it. Would this be a dealbreaker if he can't find it?

I'd have him send you better pics of the parts spread out. That way you can confirm that every part is there needed for installation. You can find a list of the parts needed here:

I'd also consider getting a dynamic tensioner. That one is using the old static version. And also plan on getting new belts.

The more you post the less of a great deal this is becoming. I agree on ditching the static tensioner, it's not sold anymore for a reason.
I also see the bearings on the left side, did he purchase all the bearings ahead of time and them have it rebuilt? Normally you let the shop use theirs than provide the parts.
For comparison, a brand new S/C can be had for around $2800 before tax and shipping with 5% promo codes.

ya...i think i'm starting to lean more towards passing on this used one. Even though going used saves me at least $1000, paying that extra $$$ to avoid possible problems down the road might be worth it.
