Advice Please

Just purchased a 1997 Limited w/ 100k as a second vehicle. Was able to buy it around 6k so I thought what the hell....it'll be a nicer 4x4 than my 1992 Mazda B series which has been hit more times than Joe Louis.

My question is...I think I would like to get the TRD supercharger that is availabe. Any advice for or against it? Alternatives? What kind of performance upgrade can I expect?

I am thinking of doing one on mine also. They came from the dealership as a bolt on option/. I want mine for just a little more oomph when merging onto the highway or very occasional towing of a not too heavy jet boat. But, most people here are saying that you need to do the 7th injector kit and piggyback plus beef up the tranny. Then again a lot of these people brag about how it hauls ass and the burnouts they do. I am thinking I can slap one on if I don't plan abusing or rally racing it.

Congrats on the 4runner. Welcome! Before you know it, your gonna be obsessed like the rest of us. I dont know too much about the TRD superchargers, but if your willing to dish out some cash for it, then I hear its plenty worth it.

A basic SC by no means makes a 4Runner a tire burning machine since your 1/4 mile times would drop from a high 17 to a mid 16 at most with a basic SC kit which is good for about another 60hp at the crank.

It is nice for that extra passing and pulling power but you gotta wiegh in how you are going to use it and if you really need it since premium gas is a must. Off road it really makes no diff.

I asked the same question at the dealer and they said if I were to put a S/C on my vehicle that it should probably be done no later than 75k to 80K miles before things start to get worn in place. It may also depend if it was hiway versus all city driving to. I hate to see someone damage an engine and have to spend a lot more money for another one. Thats just my 2 cents. Good luck.

lets face it, stock the 4runner can't get out of its own way. I love my S/C'ed 4runner. I will never drive one that is not supercharged again. the best part is, its possible to maintain the same MPG. this all depends on driving habits. there are some guys in the low 15's upper 14's with their s/c 4runner

Those "quick" 4Runners are pretty well modded and they put time into getting them as quick as a stock RAV4 which is why you gotta weigh the pros and cons and if an SC is right for you with the possiblilty of future headaches.

Yes,the 3rd gen is pretty slow but if you need to feel better about it's power go drive a 3.0 Runner.

I'd love an SC and could afford to do it right but I don't see the need for extra power when it does fine around town on 85 octane and off road but maintaining a good speed up over the Continental Divide would be nice but still can't justify the cost too.

My 4runner will be retired from it's DD duties by next fall so maybe an SC might be fun then when I can choose when I drive it.
