Greetings,
A few specs before I get to my question.
99 4runner, base model, 4cyl (2.7l 3RZ) 5 spd tranny. No engine mods and currently has 216k and still going strong (strong as a 4 banger can be…LOL).
-ARB lockers front and rear with 529 gears
-Full skids, sliders, front and rear plate bumpers
-255/85r16 (33’s) Maxxis Bighorn tires on stock 5 spoke wheels.
I built this to be an overland / explore / trail rig. It is not my DD, and not intended to be rock crawler. I am mostly happy with this set up, except for when I have to travel very far on the highway to explore a new area, which I find myself doing more and more of, and I eventually want to do Moab (600 mile drive).
At 70 mph I’m turning 3200 rpm. If I stepped up to a 35” tire (specifically Super Swamper 35x10.5x 16 SSR radial….because I like the tall skinnies) I would only be turning 3022 RPM (according to Grimjeeper gear ratio calculator). That’s not the only reason for considering 35’s. I’ve always admired the looks of 3rd gen runners on 35’s, and they would help add a little ground clearance.
So, lets here it…do you think it would be a good decision? Can I run these tires (skinny) without wheel spacers or a body lift? Is there a better option for a skinny 35” tire?
I gladly welcome any and all advice. This will be an expensive mod, and want to spend my money wisely. Translated…I don’t want to spend the money and then regret it.
Regards
Durwin
