AEM Intake

I've got a '98 SR5 3.4 L V6 and I'm currently looking at intakes for it. So far I've found the K&N FIPK and an Injen...I was looking at AEM intakes and found some for cheaper but for some reason the will only fit the 2.7L...I may be asking a completely stupid question, but for the moment I can't think of the answer. So could someone please enlighten me? Thank you.

i was also looking at the fact that the 5VZ-FE engine remained the same in the 98 and 99, and AEM make a Air Intake for the 3.4L on the 99...any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

I have the AEM intake on my runner. Mines a 2000 with the newer MAF style sensor. I don't think It'll work with the older 96-98 engines since they were slightly different, but I could be completely wrong.

I'm not sure if the 98 is the same as 01 02 but just for your info, Volant makes a pretty sick intake, as well as AFE but im pretty sure their a little more $$ then AEM and K&N. they are both true CAI cause their enclosed in a box too.

and here comes someone with the deckplate mod???? they always come up on intake post

ah yes the deckplate mod, i know a lot of people have done it, but i don't think im goin to...but hey thats just me. it's looking like i'll have to settle for the K&N...maybe the Injen.

Get a piece of PVC pipe and a couple of threaded inserts to hook the vacuum lines up to and you have the same thing. Search ISR mod on here and Yotatech. Waste of $$ IMO to buy one for $200 or even $300 when you can make one for ~$12.

yeah i have had an AEM in my civic back in the day and it was nice, Injen is good too just make sure since those dont have an enclosed box that they come with some sort of heat shield to block some of that heat from the engine, otherwise i guess it's kinda robbs your high end power. (thats what they say anyway)

Yeah my buddy just put an AEM in his RSX, and I know a few people who have an Injen intakes on a Bullitt Mustang and a Civic Si, I'm looking at the Injen Intakes...they come with a heat shield so I might do that route still looking at the Volant one as well.

just to give you my 2 cents on the volant, it's expensive but it gives your engine a nice clean look and you still get the full potential of a true CAI. My buddy has the K&N on his tacoma and personally i think my volant sounds way better. It must be the acoustics in the box or someting?? One more thing I didn't know this but if you do end up buying the volant get the powercore filter. i think they will give you a deal if you get it with the intake, otherwise its a $100 filter. but it actually tones the noise down (just a little)and you won't have to change or even clean the filter for 100,000 miles. but yeah you'll get a nice clean, low-tone, throaty growl. I love mine!

Any of the mentioned methods will only result in a very minute increase in HP/MPG. I'd go with a cheap $30 CAI off Ebay and slap a $1 AEM or whatever sticker on it. Were talking about simple plumbing here for a small V6. Only way I'd ever buy a name brand piece of pipe is if I need a warranty and it's going on a 400+HP motor esp turbo, sc or nitrous setups. my .2$

true! i mean if all you really care about is that small horsepower gain, or the 1 mile more a gallon then do it in a cheaper way i totally agree. however, Im pretty sure the higher tec ones like AFE and Volant will perfrom a lot better then the ones on ebay, I mean look at the newer sport cars they have almost the same exact setup. Yes it's only a v6 but im pretty sure im at least getting 2 more horses out of it!! and 3 more miles to the gallon :biggrin2: plus Im very OCD about things lookin ghetto Im sure many people are. If i had pvc pipe under my hood i would be embarrassed to take it anywhere to get worked on! for the intakes on ebay (I've heard) from a couple of friends as well as people on here that the chrome cracks and flakes and you can get that crap into your engine and you might have a problem. plus once again they look pretty ghetto! but its everyone for themselves on this!

I'm definetly looking into the Volant from the sites I've been the Volant CAI is like $25 cheaper than the K&N and it's a true CAI...I'll definetly look into the powercore filter, thanks for the heads up. I'm also looking into an exhaust and from what I've been looking into the stuff I'm finding is a JBA exhaust or the Borla, I'm curious if anyone knows about the JBA cuz if it's a good exhaust its $300 cheaper than the Borla. Just throwing it out there. Again thanks for the info about the Volant CAI

you bet and keep us updated! I haven't heard of the JBA exhaust, is it a full exhaust kit? ill have to look into it.

I have only had experience with the K&N FIPK and it was JUNK! There were a number of issues; the screws molded into the plastic where the MAF mounts on, were coming out of the plastic; the thing kept my CEL (Check Engine Light) coming on and I was constantly re-setting it. After receiving a new intake tube from K&N, it still did not work. So, K&N (to their credit) refunded me the entire purchase price of the FIPK and I sent the darn thing back.

that's re****ed! especially from K&N wow sorry that happened, My buddy actually had some problems with his duramax the mechanic linked the problem to be the K&N intake. i think it could be the oil on the filters? but yeah I don't know if this is relevant but before and during the install make sure you un hook the negative terminal on your battery i think it just fakes your computer out iin "forgetting" so to say whats normal and taking in the intake as normal.

GottaBeTRD the JBA is just a cat back, i already bought the Borla Cat back exhaust, still looking for which intake I want...its still between the K&N and the Volant...I'm also looking for new tires to put on the Runner, I off road on occasion mostly muddin or trail riding out in the hills or mountains, if anyone has any advice...budget for tires isn't too great right now as I'm working out transferring outta the US to my tour in Italy for two years...so these mods will be on there for awhile and when I'm done I will be putting more on. After reading about what the K&N did I'm a little more wary about purchasing it...still weighing my options, thank you for the input guys much appreciated!! :thanks:
