Build quality is excellent. If this installs as good as it looks Afe has a winner. I went with the dry filter for this intake. I have nothing againist an oiled one (have them in the Vette and BMW) but wanted to try something different.

I also really like the cone filter much better then the flat, again, it's just me. The cone filter mounts on a small velocity stack (as most cone filters do) and that is secured to the housing wall. I was just about to pull the trigger on the TRD but this unit just looked better, but I will miss the big red TRD, but the nice aluminum lid (it's foam lined) hopefully will make up for it!

I will take some pics during the install and report how the fit is. Kepp your fingers crossed it goes well!!!

Also FYI, I paid $355 shipped!

I have the aFe dry filter in the stock box. I actually get around 1mpg more since it was installed based on about 10 fill ups on either side of installing it. Not bad, paid for itself already :)

1 MPG better! Me want!

I wonder how that compares vs the TRD?

TRD is basically an oiled K&N filter. I personally do not like the oiled filters.

Has anyone removed the secondary filter in the top of the intake box yet? I pulled it out of my other two Toyotas (2010 Matrix, 2010 Corolla S) and that netted a little power in the "butt dyno".

Quick Search Came Up With This...

Doubt shipping will be more than $20.00!!! I guess depending on where you live and how fast you want it.

On the aFe site, the model number seems to be 54-81932. There are 3 filter options available including oiled, dry, and "oiled"--whatever that means. Just searching prices on Google shopping by the model number, I see lower prices available such as on Captwholesale.com. I am waiting to hear what people say after installing this and using it for a while before I do this mod. If somebody can find a promo code for captwholesale, let us know.

Cheers,
Greg

which model is the "best one"?... can't wait to read up on the install! is anyone doing the intake & the exhaust mod?

The primary difference is the filter media, the density of that media and whether it is oiled or not. As Airwolf indicated, I think its personal preference and you can't go wrong with your choice.

I have an oiled K&N on my 4th and I was advised to purchase the 5 R. And the price is right at $375.

It is now installed and I am even more impressed with how the unit looks and fits.
Install took 30 minutes, not including the pre-read thru. Instructions were dead on!

Fit is great, with the alumnium lid fit actually putting the box into shape. Seal is nice, as well as the seal to the fender liner. I have read about the TRD unit having to have wire covers unwrapped; not with this unit. I used a tie wrap to help hold the wires and not put stress on the connector, but I am psycho. Not sure if it's actually needed, but it was for me!
Here are the pics installed:

Here is the seal on the fender liner:

Sound is much louder then the stock unit, which had no sound, so anything would be louder. No strange idle or any hessitations, and the throttle was responding better, mine always had a little stumble on lightly pressing the gas, not any more so that is a plus. Could not really feel any increase in power... It's a truck not a 650hp vette so I did not expect much!

Gas mileage is a wait and see. Stock I was seeing between 19.4 and 19.8 then came the lift and bigger tires and I am now seeing 18.8 and 18.9 for the 2 tankfuls. Hopefully I will see some of that come back.

On a scale of 1 to 10 for fit, it's a 10, for ease of install, again a 10, but for actual value other then I wanted it, at this point I am at a 5, after a month or so we will see if that goes up or down..

Hope this was not too boring of a read!

Please update us on the difference in mpg after you have had it for a while. I will be curious how it compares to the TRD unit.

Cheers,
Greg

You did get a good price on that thing. I ordered mine for URD and paid a little more. Oh well, happy to give Gadget and the boys over at URD the business :)
