I'm glad this thread popped up...Thanks for everyone's insights. I've been looking at exhausts and having the same internal debate of whether it's worth it. I definitely don't want it to sound like a Honda Civic muffler from K-Mart.

For those that have swapped the exhaust - any rattles? I read on a few threads at trail4runner that rattles are pretty prevalent on most aftermarket systems.

I did a Borla muffler swap. Sounds like my Tacoma’s trd exhaust, not ricey nor obnoxiously loud. Post swap there was a rattle and had to take it back to the shop. They had to readjust the bracket because the piping was rattling in something. 5 min fix for them.

I've had 4 types of exhaust: Stock, TRD, Borla and URD 3". Currently have the URD 3". No Y-Pipe on my 17 TRDP and found the URD quite loud on the interstate. IMO Opinion the loudest of the 3 in this order Loudest to quietest: URD, TRD, Borla, Stock. I actually installed a resonator in front of the muffler of the URD to reduce the noise.

If I had to do again: Borla makes the best quality system but at a price. Would install a Borla and replace the tail section with a resonator tip. In fact considering doing this in the spring and selling the URD.....stay tuned

I had a borla on my 05 rubicon TJ and it sounded fantastic I was much younger then and for some reason though an extra 15 hp was worth a grand. Personally I just want to get the clearance issue resolved where the stock pipe crosses under the 4Runner driveline. It’s funny the thought about how it’d actually sound never dawned on me till now. I certainly don’t want my 4Runner trying to sound like my srt8. The amount of time I spend researching stuff before I purchase is absurd...

You raise a good point on clearances. 2.5" to 3" OD pipes is a half inch. Amazing how big that half inch becomes when hanging the system for clearance avoiding frame or suspension contact.

Gibson with URD YPipe

I have the Gibson dual side exit mated to the URD Ypipe. Bolted right up. No issues. Sounds great. Idle has a deeper tone and when you are driving along. No drone and nothing crazy with loudness. I have people inside and they have never said anything about sounding bad or too loud. But definitely deeper. But to a car guy or person they can tell it has an exhaust. I can not complain and would recommend to anyone the set up for sure.

+1 for Gibson. I think it is very tame but growls nicely if you stomp on it.

I've sold more Gibson for the 5th gen that any other vehicle. It sounds great and is my personal fav. I also can get the Afe and Borla for anyone that wants, but I think this has smoother sound.

Yep, the side dual is the one I'm selling the most of right now, and there is also the straight out the back version.
