now, i don't have any experience with the Z1 specifically, but if it performs like the other AVIC products, i'm very confident my CarPC boots faster than it does.

However, it did take a LOT of tweaking to make right.

Does the Axim option offer any voice/speech capabilities? Or is it essentially just a portable mapquest-type tool?

Since the Axim is a PDA --- you can buy any of the popular GPS software packages that you want.

The following is a list of popular ones :

INav's IGuidance (the one I use)
OnCourse Navigator

Almost all of the GPS software available for PDA have voice guidance. It will tell you when and where to turn as you are driving. The software has 2D and 3D modes ..... has an extensive point of interest database, allows you to save favorite locations .... etc. Basically -- the software is almost exactly the same as the software that comes pre-loaded on the Garmin/Magellen/etc machines. The only thing that is not available yet is the voice-recognition for the PDA. But --- I never found this feature to be very usefull --- so I don't mind not having it.

So --- short answer : It is very far from just being a portable mapquest type tool. It is a full featured GPS navigation system that also doubles as a palm-top computer. You can watch movies on it, connect to the internet, play games, etc ----- and it will tell you how to get where you want to go.

I am like UoD. I have a palm T3 and Dell Axim X51v that I use with TomTom software and a BT GPS antenna. I think it works great. I don't use them both at the same time, just which ever one I feel like playing with at the time. The screen on the X51v in incredible (VGA) and yes the TomTom software has voice nav. You can also subscribe to the traffic report/camera access, weather and other stuff if you have a GPRS module.

It is also fun to take the equipment and do a little geocaching for which the 4runner can come in handy if you are looking for an extreme one.

Which version of TomTom are you running on your x51v?? I can't get TomTom to work on mine for some reason. That is why I ended up going with IGuidance.

I believe Navteq is the only company that provides mapping software. They're listed as the company that updates my Magellan and on the Toyota DVD as well.

Which BT GPS antenna do you use? The TomTom Navigator software/antenna combo costs $300. I've read good things about the Holux antenna, but am not sure it's any cheaper once you factor in the cost of separate nav software.

I believe that Navteq supplies maps to everyone, including google. BTW, Pioneer, pioneered consumer GPS systems for use in cars.
