I did my TBU over a year ago and ever since I had this rattling over bumps. Finally narrowed it down to my Tundra brake shoes after hitting everything with a mallet. The spring that pushes the shoes apart doesn't seem to hold them tight enough so over bumps, the shoes just rattle. Has anyone else had this issue and come up with a solution. I'm wondering if its just the brand that I purchased (I think I got mine as a reman kit on ebay).

I have this issue. I asked a mechanic friend about it and he said he could not recommend a fix for it. He mentioned placing a bead of silicone on either end of the pad in the caliper but it's also not a recommended thing to do.

There are brake pad shims that are supposed to come with every pad but toyotas are prone to this so they need more than what comes with most pads
Toyota OE pads come with more than enough 3-4 shims
Just another part you might have to go OE on, most people never even hear the noise and sometimes it happens on braking when the pad shifts up or down when going in reverse
I've ran into the issue a lot most guys just throw the shims away not really knowing what they are for.

I have OE Tundra pads on my 01 and they rattle and I have aftermarket Monroe Tundra pads on my 99 and they don't rattle. It's not an issue of OE vs aftermarket. It's an issue of using the shims. I didn't do the brakes on my 01 so I have a feeling that the guy who did do them did not use the shims or didn't use all of them. I did them on my 99 and the Monroe pads have them shims already attached to the pad so it was a lot easier and no rattle.
