Aftermarket Exhaust Effect on Small Children

My exhaust failed state inspection today. I'm not happy about having to pay for a new exhaust, but I'm happy to finally have an excuse to go with something a little more aggressive. So after doing all my homework on this forum and listening to sound clips from v8s with borla, gibson, magnaflow, etc. I'd like to hear from those of you that use your 4Runners to drive your children. I'd love to unleash the sound of the v8, but don't want it to upset my 1 year-old daughter. I appreciate the feedback. BTW, it's for an '03 Sport Edition v8.

I've been happy with my magnaflow muffler. not too loud...your kid will love it, knowing youre smiling up in the front seat.

Not an entirely fair comparison, but I had the TRD exhaust on my 5.7L Tundra (it sounded like a B-52), and my kid loved it. He always wanted me to "mash the gas."

Neighbors liked it less.

My son is 7 months old and the exhaust rumbles don't bother him at all. I have a Magnaflow bullet style muffler.

Which Magnaflow muffler do you have? Assuming it's not the full cat-back setup, is the rest of it stock (resonator, pipes, etc)?

I'm on the fence about what route to take...seems like lots of people on here swap out the muffler and keep it fairly stock instead of going the full catback route. That would involve a muffler shop though...don't think I could do the muffler swap my own whereas I could do a bolt-on cat back system in my driveway. I was told that the back of my muffler has a slight leak and the flange between the muffler and resonator is rusted out, so I could still swap in just the muffler and have a sleeve welded in in place of the flange.

Cat back swaps are generally only good for lightening your wallet. The only thing you benefit from is if you buy a real nice one it's probably all stainless.

Im going to say one word GIBSON, I have a 3.5 year old, I work at toyota and have heard every make of exhaust, and IMO I wouldnt look back and enjoy my exhaust at every note.

I think as long as it's legal...it probably won't have any adverse effects.

But LONG term exposure to loud sounds can have adverse on your hearing as you get older.

Gibson is perfect IMO. Its not too loud at all, but you still get the nice deep V8 rumble. Stainless version wasn't much at all compared to the competition.

I have a flowmaster which I absolutely love the sound of but if I were going for something a little more tame I would defiantly go with Mangaflow.

The hum from the BFG's and wind noise is pretty loud in the second video but you get the point.

Thank you for all of the feedback. I think I am just going to replace the muffler for now and save for shocks to replace the XREAS when the time comes. I've done a lot of homework on the magnaflow and flowmaster setups. Are there any other brands that should be considered? Durability is one of my top priorities.

I don't have it yet, but I'm going with Gibson exhaust. I'm not worried about the effect on my kids because my wife and I have worked hard to make them bomb-proof. Absent physically jarring them awake (and even then, it can be difficult), nothing wakes them up.

I installed a gibson cat back on my 04 V8 about 3 months ago. I was actually a little more aggressive than i thought it would be but im loving every second of it. I have a 11 month old and when she gets in her seat she goes right to sleep. I dont think you can go wrong with the gibson and its price tag

I have the Gibson Catback Exhaust and my little one isn't bothered by it.

Imo sounds clips are never correct, To install it took me 30min, had to cut old stuff off, but I do have a lift, There is only 2 options, I went with non SS.

A few issues with having a family and a loud exhaust (I have 3 kids under 5).
-If have to you leave the house when everyone is sleeping you usually wake up a few if not everyone.
- Some aftermarket exhaust will leave you with the drone from hell making riding in the vehicle less enjoyable for little ones and spouses.
