V6 Exhaust

I know, another exhaust question.

This is purely for input and opinions on what exhaust, or specifically muffler, people have liked on their 4.0.

I’ve always liked having a little extra rumble to the exhaust, something where you can definitely tell it’s not stock, but not being too loud either.

I initially went with just the Gibson cat back exhaust. When everything else was stock and this was it, I liked it, but didn’t love it.
Then I added URD headers and a 12” Vibrant resonator right before the muffler to minimize any raspiness the headers have been known to create.

This brought the noise level up a notch and it’s just not my style. It’s louder than I want, and the drone is too much. When I’m cruising around at 40mph or so and the RPM’s are around 1100-1200 it’s just annoying.

So... the headers and resonator are staying on, but I’d like to replace the muffler to change up the sound a bit and make it a little less aggressive.

What muffler have others gone with that also have LT headers? What else do others have that they like and would be considered less aggressive than the Gibson?

When I was first looking at exhaust, I was really liking the Magnaflow setup on a Tacoma, just not sure how that’ll work with the headers.

This is the tone that I’d like to have, but this is a stock Tacoma with only the catback. Not sure how much different the sound would be with headers. But this muffler is what I’m leaning towards.

I drove a 2019 with Cat Black. I liked the sound but it was a bit loud for passengers in the back seat. Didn't think it would be appropriate for the long term.

A little update here to the exhaust situation.

After a couple more changes I have it done finally.

After I started this thread I decided on the Flowmaster 70 series. Something that would give it a little aftermarket tone but hopefully not be too loud, being that is about as mild of a Flowmaster as they make.

After getting the Flowmaster on, I really did like the tone more than the Gibson muffler, but it was still too loud. At idle it was a notch below what the Gibson was, but when I’d accelerate, even moderately, it was as loud, if not louder than the Gibson at certain RPM’s.
I towed my raft the first weekend after doing it and it became apparent I’d have to do something else. The sound inside the cab was still just too much.

I decided on a Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator and replace the exhaust tip. That 4” tip the Gibson came with looked cool, but it was just acting as a megaphone for the exhaust.

The exhaust shop just chopped the piping off from the back of the muffler and started over. That part of the exhaust was rattling against the frame at certain rpms anyway since it was kind of forced into place when replacing the Gibson muffler with the Flowmaster.

I wanted the resonator near the rear of the whole system as the last thing the exhaust flowed through. I didn’t want it sitting low like the factory one came though. The shop was able to tuck the resonator up quite a bit, so it can’t be seen from just looking at from the street.

So what started out as a Gibson catback is a true Frankenstein of a catback now. I think all that remains from the original cat back is literally the flange and maybe 10” of piping.

The layout is; from the flange, maybe 6” of piping into a Vibrant bottle style resonator (initially out on to minimize rasp of URD headers), then a couple inches of piping into the Flowmaster 70 series muffler, up and over the rear axle into the Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator, mounted almost vertically, then a standard 2.5” tailpipe, side exit behind the rear tire.

The sound is actually closer to stock than I was even anticipating. There is a little rumble and tone to it when I rev it, but inside the cabin under normal driving, it sounds stock.
Honestly almost too quiet if I’m being picky, but I’d rather have that than something that was too loud and drones.

I was going to drive a couple hundred miles to let everything kind of break in and I’ll do a sound clip to share.
